Dave Phillips + R.H.Y. Yau "Illusion Is A Natural Condition" CD "In the sense of a therapeutic exposition, testing limitations, reactions of the psyche and of the body, of the realities and the senses, relating to direct social and behavioural environments and surroundings, of mankind and its un/doings. I nstinctive, animalistic and emotional sides of existence, in search of an origin, not as much as a reduction but in the sense of a release from the omnipresent infatuation and swoon of the idiots and assholes and their reduction of being that debase dignity. Illusion is a natural condition.

Dave Philips + R.H.Y. Yau presents “Illusion Is A Natural Condition" , the long anticipated Phillips + Yau collaborations culled between 2000–2005. D ave Phillips began his musical career when he was 17, co-founding the hardcore extremists Fear of God in 1987. As Fear of God developed Phillips began to see that their faster, shorter, noisier approaches to grindcore were merely a springboard for more psychologically challenging and physically demanding artforms. Soon after Fear of God’s demise in 1989, he joined the actionist Schimpfluch-Gruppe which has followed the traditions of abjection and transgression as dictated by the Viennese Aktionists. Phillips has further developed these transgressions along with sociopolitical actionism in his solo efforts. R .H.Y. Yau is a curator and sound artist who has been active in the sonic arts since 1993. Yau’s sonic works are inspired by sound poetry, actionism, and the processes of musique concrete. But bored by the musique concrete’s academic cliques, Yau creates what he calls “action-concrete.” These organic synapses of voice, body, and raw materiality are then combined with raw electronics to sound experiences of both ultra-violence and absolute absurdity at its most base level.

This release features ten lithographic reproductions of original drawings by Leif Elggren. Limited edition of 1000." (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $12.00 Add to Cart

Michael Gendreau "Vitoj" CD "Long-time San Francisco based sound artist, internationally known from his extensive discography as Crawling With Tarts, releases his second full- length solo work titled Vitoj.Continuing his microscopic exploration of dense sonic landscapes within volatile stases, Gendreau eavesdrops on pressurized states of compressed gas within hydrogen tanks, diaphanous vinyl recordings of archaic voices, and perilous work environments in the far east. All explored in real-time, this series of recordings further explore the volatile balance of Gendreau's physical and psychological states‹scientific detritus working as an acoustician and social/cultural detritus in everyday nomadic life‹reaching the threshold of exhaustion where his realizations are discovered in modes of "half-sleep." Vitoj offers a glimpse of these stases in dreamlike form. (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $10.00 Add to Cart

Zbigniew Karkowski/Antimatter "KHZ" CD "The second collaboration by Karkowski and Xopher Davidson (Antimatter) is a masterful work that rewards any patient listener with slowly unfolding layers of analog hum and buzz. The CD consists of one 45 minute piece, and this format suits the work well, as this kind of piece needs to develop slowly over a long period of time. The first 13 minutes are calm, and consist of low end rumbling and quiet high-pitched tones. This sort of restraint has often been a prelude to a blizzard of harsh noise in Karkowski's past work. kHz is successful because it develops in a gradual manner, rather than simply being an exercise in quiet/loud interplay. This calm atmosphere eventually gives way to rapid clicking, analog patterns which hover at a moderate volume, and help the piece achieve a sense of movement. By 24 minutes these hums and buzzes have become a much louder chorus of shifting electronic pulses that are a massive payoff. The next four minutes are an excellent study of the interplay between this all-enveloping drone and some subtle, high-pitched staccato rhythms. The arrival of a brief noisy section towards the end is barely noticeable due to the gradual accumulation of intensity that characterizes the flow of the piece. Karkowski benefits greatly from this collaboration, as it seems to encourage his (relatively) subdued side. It is to their credit that the pair have restricted the length of this piece to 45 minutes, resisting the temptation to fill the CD to its capacity. While too many abstract sound artists explore only one end of the sonic spectrum, Karkowski and Davidson have succeeded in producing a work that focuses on the way these elements can work together. It is uncertain what relevance the only sleevenote, "rebounding=junk of life" -R. Selavy, has to the sounds contained within, but any alliance with Marcel Duchamp's feminine alter-ego is a gesture to be applauded." - Jim Siegel, Brainwashed (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $12.00 Add to Cart

Joe Colley "Desperate Attempts at Beauty: Conceptual and Research Exercises" CD "Desperate Attempts at Beauty: Conceptual and Research Excercises" A long awaited full-length solo from Joe Colley (Crawl Unit). This ambitious project documents sonic phenomena discoveries both mental and physical, with or without alteration. Also features a gathering of text that is, simply put: pure nihilism. The sound piece was sampled and composed from organic phenomena and artificial electronic noises. The uneasy coexistence of cracking ice, disintegrating clay and unstable systems of combined electronic devices 'could be seen as a manifestation of the schizophrenia that is crucial to the survival of the modern individual'. Desperate Attempts at Beauty was recently awarded the Transmediale 2005 award in Berlin. (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $12.00 Add to Cart

Kiyoshi Mizutani/Daniel Menche "Garden" CD "Misconceptions between reality and fiction, "Garden" is the first collaboration between these two monsters of noise. R.H.Y. Yau "Coagulation: Selected Works 1996-2000 " CD "Completely brutal docomentation of Yau's abject noise actionism completed between 1996 and 2000. As pure as it gets, this collection features rare compilation material and previously unreleased actions, including rare collaboration tracks with Kazumoto Endo."

"Eighteen short, painful blasts of vocal-induced distortion that are easily on the same pain threshold as Merzbow's wall-of-noise works, but without the time commitment Merzbow demands. Coagulation is like a stripped-down Hollowing album, with the same infinite layers of sound mashed together to create chaos (and sometimes all run through a distortion pedal to create thick, blistering walls of static), but without the melodic elements. The main source of Yau's recordings is voice, and for all we can tell there's nothing here BUT voice, just pounded and processed into something unrecognizable most of the time." Scott Arford/Randy H. Y. Yau/Michael Nine "7HZ" CD 7hz, founded in 1995 by Scott Arford, has continued to function as San Francisco's premiere venue for noise and experimental media. A space where new combinations of image, sound, and experience can be realized. Since its inception it has had the privilege of hosting performances for many of the world's most interesting, progressive, and challenging sound and media artists. This CD represents some of the best recordings by each of the 3 people that live at 7hz and make it the wonderful place that it is. Randy has appeared on Ground Fault (GF009 - RHY Yau "The Hidden Tongue"). Scott is also no stranger to Ground Fault (GF003 - Radiosonde "Meter Sickness"). Michael Nine is better known for his work under the name Death Squad. This is the fourth collaborative CD between Randy Yaus Aucultare Reseach label and Ground Fault Recordings. Scott Arford/Randy H.Y. Yau Edit for Unconsciousness CD "The dark, black and white case denies the variety of activity going on here. But 'Edit..' has this vast display of modes that affect the senses like a blindfolded ride through a blacked-out city. Delightful tension and fleeting sonic spectacle are the main experiences here. Four basic tracks encapsulate four different pieces, each with several worlds inside of itself. Yau's 'Realia' is a restless collection of nervous mechanical and organic noises, culminating in a sudden blotch of noise cut off as with a meat-cleaver. Then the 'Headworms' track by Arford meanders in and tinkles around with various objects, collaged utterances from the throat of incidental electronics, the cluttered spiritual clumsiness of messing-about with quiet sonics. But 'Drift Counter' is very nice, a twenty-three minute float through the drifting ranges of warm static and fuzzy mist, undulating and singing, a full experience that leads you into Yau's closing piece of roughly the same length. I'll leave that one for your experience. Excellent material. Try Yau's 'Hidden Tongue' disc too and witness some unique work going on over there on the left coast." Lionel Marchetti "Sirrus" CD "When it comes to appreciating electro-acoustic music, there is a lot of subjectivity involved. One's responses to such and such sounds and ambiences can vary greatly from one pair of ears to another. Yet, some consensus can be reached in the case of particularly gifted composers. Lionel Marchetti belongs to this category. Without following straight cinematic sequences ('cinema for the ear' having become a much overused expression by 2001), his works hold a dramatic charge, a narrative tension that grabs the listener's attention and won't let go. Piggy-backing on the composer's busy release schedule in 2001 (with three new albums out by August), the label Auscultare unearthed Sirrus, a suite in three movements created in 1989-1990. It is pure electro-acoustic music, the academic kind, although it shows a vivacity, richness in imagery, and creativity superior to many composers in the field, young or old. The pieces are accompanied by Hermetic texts by Olivier Capparos (in French and English) describing the Circle, the Fire, the Mud, and the Sky Principles. How they relate to the music remains uncertain, but the symbolism they delve in finds echoes in Marchetti's music. 'Micro-Climat' is the best piece: well-paced, with surprising twists and turns but still very coherent. 'Passerelle' is also strong and includes an unexpected synthesizer solo toward the end (Keith Emerson having something to prove). The title track lacks some organization. Ideas tumble over one another without indicating a clear direction or intention. This one also has some nice monophonic analog synth (unless it is a theremin?) and gradually moves away from real-world sound sources to become purely electronic. One detects the eagerness and, at times, lack of focus frequent in early compositions, but Marchetti is a top-rate composer. Even his slightly flawed works are worth checking out." — François Couture The first of many collaborative releases between Auscultare Research and Ground Fault Recordings. V/A "Radio Territories" Book + CD The latest in the ongoing collaborative releases between Errant Bodies and Ground Fault. This new title is part of the Anthology Series. "The legacy of radio and the arts has spawned forms of radical culture, from early Modernist notions of the “Wireless Imagination” and its subsequent vernacular tongues to Acoustic Ecology’s call for “Radical Radio” based on removing the DJ, transmission and broadcast media upsets and redistributes understandings of place, corporeality, social exchange, and the politics of information. Such instances of radicality find their current expression in radio networking and streaming, which seek to counter or supplement forms of public broadcasting through creating unique forms of collectivity. In response to these current initiatives, Radio Territories seeks to open the book on radio’s historical, medial, and aesthetical status.

Critical and creative essays by historians, media theorists, and radio producers, including Steve Goodman, Heidi Grundmann, Douglas Kahn, Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen, and Ellen Waterman, are coupled with artistic and activist projects, from such practitioners as Anna Friz, LIGNA, and apo33, with a view toward locating the expanding and deepening reach of radio. Presupposing an intrinsic relation between transmission and place, Radio Territories aims to examine in what ways physical and cultural geographies become both defined and unsettled by the powers of broadcast. While radio through the Modern period stitched together an electronic network by expanding outward, current radio may fulfill Marshall McLuhan’s global idea of the “extended nervous system” by networking individual lives on a cellular level. Radio is not only out there in the ether, but also totally inside, as signals that intensify the stratifications of culture.

Including additional contributions by Kabir Carter, Sophie Gosselin/apo33, Erik Granly Jensen, Brandon LaBelle, Sophea Lerner, elpueblodechina a.k.a. Alejandra Pérez Núnez, Kate Sieper, James Sey, neuroTransmitter, Marie Wennersten / SR c, and Achim Wollscheid.

Sutcliffe Jugend "This Is The Truth" CD The first new recordings from Sutcliffe Jugend in over 8 years. Sutcliffe Jugend began in 1982 as a sub-project from the main extreme band, Whitehouse, and instantly gained notoriety as one of the harshest exponents of the original power electronics scene in the world. After releasing the monumental 10xCS boxset "We Spit On Their Graves" on Come Organisation in 1982, Sutcliffe Jugend released a handful of albums until 1999. A single 7" was released in 2001 and they weren't heard from again since 2006 when they played their first ever live show. Four shows were performed in 2006 and work on a new studio album was soon underway. One of the most extreme, influential and mysterious bands of the early 80s were back almost 25 years later.

Recorded and mixed during the latter half of 2006, Kevin Tomkins returns to vocals for the first time since "The Victim As Beauty". While this album is a continuation of all before, it feels like a new beginning for them, for the first time Kevin and Paul have started to experiment with the Sutcliffe Jugend sound. Lyrically things have also moved on a great deal, with a more personal aspect to the songs than ever before.(Ground Fault/Hospital Productions) $12.00 Add to Cart

Michael Prime "L-Fields" CD "Some records will please you, others will disturb or mystify you. And then some rare specimens will extend your conception of life. Michael Prime's L-fields is of the latter category. The source material on L-fields consists of bioelectrical recordings of hallucinogenic plants. Yep. Prime records the fluctuations of the electric guitar field of a plant, fluctuations that trigger an oscillator. Prime later compresses, overlays, and integrates sounds from the surrounding environment to the signal and voilà: through a work aesthetically close to electroacoustics, the listener is invited to hear a plant live its life! L-fields delivers three experiments of this type (between 16 and 21 minutes each) with three different species: Cannabis sativa, Amanita muscaria, and Lophophora williamsii. Why all hallucinogenic plants? Because they had such an influence on the music of the last four decades it is about time you hear their music. The result is a fascinating organic music, out of this world and yet at the heart of our world. Composer David Dunn made some in situ environmental recordings in the 1970s-1980s; he used environments like the Grand Canyon to spatialize his music and instructed the musicians to interact with manifestations from the ecosystem (like nearby birds, for instance). But Michael Prime goes beyond this technique: instead of modifying the music in order to get a reaction from the environment, he modifies the environment (accentuating ambient light, touching the plant, etc.) to stimulate modifications in the internal "music" of plants. Simply fascinating. The four-and-a-half-stars rating goes as much to the context of artistic production at play than to the result itself, since one cannot separate the two when evaluating this album." Bowline S/T CD "Behind Bowline we find the more and more present musician David Maranha, who was once best known as Osso Exotico, and these days also works as a solo musician and one Francesco Dillon. He is from Italy and studied the cello. These days he is a member of Alter-Ego (see Vital Weekly 602 for their work with Gavin Bryars) as well as playing with people like Matmos, Pan Sonic and Scanner. A man of many talents. Here too Dillon plays cello, whereas Maranha gets credit for 'hammond organ, violin, vox amplifier (with Francesco cello signal), glass harmonica, tremolo and distortion pedals'. Of the four tracks , the first is the most silent one, taking several minutes to get started. Like with so many other projects of David Maranha, in which ever form it takes, this is a work of minimalism. Of sheer, utter minimalism and what beauty, once again. The careful strumming of various string instruments, the drones added, sparsely of course, from the other instruments. Three short tracks which eventually culminate in the fourth track, which takes up about two-third of the CD and in which the three previous excursions return but glorified. Everything comes together here. If you love Osso Exotico or any of the works Maranha did after that, this is will be a most welcome addition. Also fans of traditional minimal music, especially Lamonte Young will find this a great release, I'm sure of that." (FdW - Vital Weekly 605) (Sonoris) $10.00 Add to Cart

Kozo Inada "J[]" CD Kozo Inada is a japanese sound artist who has previously released records on various labels around the world (Staalplaat, Selektion, Digital Narcis, V2). His last record published is a collaborative work with Philip Samartzis on the australian label Room40. His music is a balance between austere minimalism and immense spaces in sound that creates a very strong tension and keeps the listener captivated from the beginning to the end. For J[], he uses samples and loops of classical music as sound materials for Max/Msp treatments. The result is a densely layered and strong sound work, with slow rises and falls, hypnotic loops and some ruptures that give texture to silence. A sonic journey into aerial and hypnotic universes." label description (Sonoris) $10.00 Add to Cart

Steve Roden "Three Roots Carved to Look Like Stone" CD "This work was originally an installation presented at inmo gallery, in chinatown/los angeles, december 2000. the work was created using 3 objects purchased at chinatown giftshops: a toy wooden flute, a small aluminum wind chime, a small paper accordion. each track was created using one of these objects as the only sound source. some of the sounds have been processed electronically. the installation was created in response to: the generic sounding 'muzak' playing in most of the public spaces of chinatown; the private landscape of chinatown lingering unnoticed in alleys and second floor windows; and, a book on the history of chinese philosopher's stones. the audio was installed in front of a large picture window facing the chinatown pedestrian area." ErikM "Monofacemirror" CD "Beginning his recorded career as a turntablist, Erik M advanced over the years to include all manner of electronic manipulation, his work becoming progressively richer and more mysterious. Mono.Face.Mirror, a brief (26-minute) disc, offered one of the most compelling examples of his sonic investigations, piling allusion upon allusion into a huge and healthy sandwich of sound. There are surprising free jazz sax squalls toward the beginning of the single track that merge into what might be some ultra-low Tibetan horns, all overlaid on vinyl scratches and humming drones. A jumpy piano attack surfaces, is looped, and competes against whirring synth-like tones before abating, then reappears several minutes later as though grabbed from a parallel universe. Shards of contemporary strings appear, set against light percussion in a "sampled" manner that recalls some of John Wall's work. Eventually, a male voice speaking in French is heard over a mix of natural sounds and drums, very reminiscent of the musique concrete of Luc Ferrari. Still, Erik M manages to make this particular sound world very much his own and, despite its apparent fragmentation, Mono.Face.Mirror ultimately coheres into a powerful, abstract statement, if one which belies easy explanation. Though brief, it's a fine, mature statement and highly recommended." Brian Olewnick / All Music Guide (Sonoris) $10.00 Add to Cart

Laurent Dailleau "Supersternal Notch" CD "Dailleau is a member of Triolid and Le Complexe de la Viande and perfoms from time to time with Helmut Schafer and Atau Tanaka. I'm unfamiliar with the bands but I know the two others as composers of powerbook music, both in their very own style. This CD is a solo CD recorded at various concerts, where he performed on theremin, msp-propelled theremin, aks synth and computer. These eight pieces can be best described as dense. Layered sounds with a drone like character, which can grow into noise (but it never reaches the peak of noise). Although some of the tracks remind me of laptop like cracklings and even a rhythm, such as 'Little Odyssey', Dailleau never gets out of control and structure of the music remains important. The drone like character remains his important thing. Therefore this is an utmost enjoyable CD if you like the work of Asmus Tietchens, Troum but also Mego. Not the least names to be compared with. Great stuff indeed." FdW / Vital weekly (Sonoris) $10.00 Add to Cart

Poire_Z "Presque_Chic" CD "Poire Z is almost like a super group, as it's collaborative work between drummer Gunter Muller, electronics by Erik M and the cracked everyday electronics of Moslang and Guhl - the latter two known as Voice Crack. Presented here are two lengthy and heavy weighted pieces recorded at two different festivals. Overall the music is densely layered (although I can't say if this is a straight recording or a mixed multi-track version; I assume the first) which moves into various places and spaces. Small events happen all over the place, get their shape and move to the next small event. You can detect sine waves, radio signals, static drones. Poire Z moves cleverly from subdued areas into more noisy ones, in order to slide back into softer passages. They even hit upon a strong rhythmic section in their recording at the "Taktlos festival", that is almost Pan Sonic like. Great stuff." FdW / Vital weekly (Sonoris) $10.00 Add to Cart

Sensorband "Area/Puls" CD "Three guys with a bunch of ropes, connected with sensors. By moving around, climbing in the ropes, the sound is changed by the sensors. These three guys are Edwin van der Heide, Atau Tanaka and Zbigniew Karkowski - three guys with a wide experience in sound, electronic music and performances. The question of course is: will their sound last on CD? Since they use pure tones and oscillations which change because of bodily movements, nothing might happen if you play this at home. It's unclear wether these four tracks, one analogue and three digital, are recorded live, or used in live performances. The CD opens with 'digtal.1', a slowly moving static line with small pulses, gradually increasing tension. The 'analogue' track is much a like, but much slower. The built-up takes more time (no surprise in a track that lasts 28 minutes) and is very austere in setting. The two shorter 'digital.2' and 'digital.3' are like the opening track. More pulsating, without getting anywhere near a beat. Number is almost like a sentimental song, with a tone of sadness in there. The presstext talks about the missing link between Hafler Trio and Pan Sonic, I'd like to add a link to Alvin Lucier's Music On A Long Thin Wire: pure tones changed by the environment. A very minimal, but very nice work..." FdW / Vital Weekly (Sonoris) $10.00 Add to Cart

Steve Roden/In Be Tween Noise "The Radio" "Reissue of this late 1999 release and out of print since a long time. "Roden indicated to me that he ‘totally loves this piece’ and I can understand why. This is a beautiful sound work/piece of music (in that broader meaning of music that people like Roden explore). Its density, intricacy and beauty remind me of artists who work only in miniatures: as explored in the Roden ‘special issue’ (&etc v1.7), he works in bounded musical forms, yet creates pieces in there which are expansive and could stretch infinitely despite their limits.‘The radio’ is a prime example of this - each section could be left to continue further and further, delving into its focused world, and the whole disk could be left to repeat, the narrow passage of its composition gradually expanding to encompass the world. Perhaps I exaggerate, but this is a magical, beautiful piece that should not be missed." Ampersand Etcetera (Sonoris) $10.00 Add to Cart

Christian Alati / Giuseppe Ielasi / Ruggero Radaele CD "Sonoris isn't exactely known as an improv label, but they make an exception here with the work of three Italian improvisers, which are closely linked to the super improv label Fringes. I didn't glance very much at the cover very much while playing this CD, so the notion that these are two guitarists and a percussionist struck me. Whatever they produce, its hard to pin down as guitar and percussion. They go by a slow curve from almost silence to almost noisy, with crackles (what sort of guitar produces crackles like a lap-top, me wonder in mild curiosity). There those recognizable AMM influenced bits (although their curve is usually even longer) and even a link to industrial music (the motor like buzz in 'Text Piece'). This makes this into a somewhat more varied CD, and you could even wonder if the variations aren't too much. Myself, I thought it was ok and thought it was a well-entertaining CD." Taku Sugimoto / Kevin Drumm "Den" CD "An album that documents the concert by two guitarists (of which one also plays electronics) held on April 5th, 2000 in Japan. Sugimoto is known for his improv style in which silence plays an extensive role. He strums a string, waits, strums the same and waits again. The space in which he plays becomes an important factor. Drumm is kinda similar, but he's responsible for the electronic part, so he fills his guitar strums, with occasional feedback, crackles and glitches. Yet, Drumm is a controller, so he never lets things out of control. Listening to these 41 minutes you feel the air of the Gallery where this was recorded, so much silent interludes, delicate strumming, isolated cracks and more silence. If you try listening superficially, then the whole thing go lost. This requires your full attention, or better play something else. Zen in music." Peter Duimelinks / Roel Meelkop / Ralf Wehowsky "Verklarte Tage" CD "Ralf Wehowsky (RLW) was founding member, and most important conspirator in P16D4. Peter Duimelinks and Roel Meelkop were members of THU20. Profitable postal collaboration (or each one composes from another one's material) and between three current figures of electroacoustic musics. Stratified resonances, shocks of sounds like tectonic plates, brutal ruptures opening on different spaces. A formal and structural work of the most interestings." Jerome Noetinger / Metamkine (Sonoris) $10.00 Add to Cart

Thomas Dimuzio / Dan Burke "Hz" CD "The truth is, you found something incomprehensibly comforting in these sounds, this noise, this audible darkness. It occupies the space and fills your lungs, so in such a short time you grew accustomed to this nightmare, probably just in time for Burke and Dimuzio to sever the umbilical cord so suddenly, leaving you helpless and in silence. (Richard di Santo / Incursion)
Dan Burke has called this one of his favorite works he's put out. Dimuzio is the guy behind Gench Studios, the place where so many experimental labels get their stuff mastered. HZ is a refined, driving, eclectic nightmare of beats, darkhop and odd sound tones and soundscapes. The listen deepens as it progresses, with varied layers of styles developing and fading." Manifold (Sonoris) $10.00 Add to Cart

Artifical Memory Trace "Distori (Noah)" CD "Artifical Memory Trace sort of is the right person to fit these traditions of electro-acoustic music: intelligentely composed with modern means (read: sampling), into relatively short pieces that hold the attention. Without any limitation he jumps back and forth in his sound material. Sometimes all the events seem to be apparent at the same time, but at other times one long curve is drawn, such as in the beautiful opening piece 'Skeletune(s)'. AMT can be placed among the likes of Illusion Of Safety and Brume. With the latter AMT shares something odd: presenting a large body of work, which ranges from good to excellent, it is hard to see the difference between each work." ErikM "Zygosis" CD "'zygosis', which is his first fulltime recording, starts with a witty beat track mixing high-pitched shakespeare monologues over syncopated jazz loops, and quickly convinces you that the deconstruction of stolen sound material (sourced from cabaret, orchestral music, rock, poetry...) may grow into something utterly personal and unique - most extraordinary examples are tracks 3, 4 & 6. after this tour-de-force, the listener is allowed a short break, while the cd-player skipps through the almost empty regions of track 9 - 22 (microscopic shards of static, lasting only for a few seconds each). those are quickly followed by a very powerful and dramatic piece (agora) that bears an almost recognizable song structure. the cd ends rather quietly with three unsymetrical ambient pieces followed by a short and funny epilogue. there's nothing more to add, except that 'zygosis' is probably one of the most brilliant achievements in musical 'piratage' so far, and first of all - regardless to it's historical relevance - it's simply beautyful!" http606 (Sonoris) $10.00 Add to Cart

Matt Shoemaker "Mutable Depths" 3"CD "Matt Shoemaker had been invited to participate in a field recording workshop in the Amazon in 2007 under the mentorship of Francisco Lopez. With all of tactile squishes and wet slurps that introduce his 20 minute composition for the Ferns series of 3" CDs, I had wrong assumed that these sounds were sourced from those field recordings. No, it turns out that Shoemaker's sounds came from the wintry environments of Seattle, Washington. It is the sound of melting ice, and not some scurrying beetle. The details to Shoemaker's composition, like on all of his work, are immaculately presented, with each encroaching sound being vibrant and rich. The composition begins with a few clicks and crackles from his frozen source, with a gradual swell of densely compacted gray sounds and rumbles. Think Chris Watson's finale to Weather Report, but with the narrative twisted towards the analysis of natural decay, rot, and putrefaction. His electo-acoustic sensibility effortlessly makes itself know amongst the field recordings with pierced drones refracting through the ice." label description (Ferns) $8.00 Add to Cart

Burning Star Core "Challenger" CD "Challenger is a composed work rather than his more improvised work, each piece revolving around a central melodic theme with field recordings, an audio diary bridging the gaps. It's emotions of a period of time set to tape. The sounds range from pure tonal mood to huge electronic crescendos. But what's most remarkable is the use of space, where parts come in and drop to build or recede .When the piano crashes in "Mysteries of the Organ" its almost a frustration of paradise, a rejection of perfection or maybe a jolt of inexplicable life, unable to be translated into proper `communication. Juxtaposed with the quiet haunting of "Hopelessly Devoted" which sounds like a love letter written to outer space, it makes for an album that is both dynamic yet consistent as a full statement." label description (Hospital/Plastic) $12.00 Add to Cart

Sissy Spacek "California Ax" 4xCD "Up to this point Sissy Spacek have only released 4 proper albums, all of which could probably be squeezed together onto one CD. What we have in this release is 4 new full length albums recorded throughout 2007. Tinsel Dripping Ink (disk 1) is 26 tracks in 45 minutes covering all territory from grindcore, noise, electro-acoustic improv, musique concrete, noisecore, and electronics. It's primarily made up of new work, but also roots through the cutting floor for the best bits that didn't make it onto previous efforts for one reason or another, with a few tracks dating as far back as 1998. Police (disk 2) is 11 tracks in 40 minutes of electro-acoustic improv with girls on drums. Abreq Ad Habra (disk 3) gets it's title from an Arabic phrase pre-dating "Abracadabra" that translates "hurl a lightning bolt even unto death" which we'll choose to misread as "hurl an even lightning bolt until death." This disc contains the most raw recordings Sissy Spacek have ever released, the first being a 40 minute inferno recorded on KXLU and the second from a 20 minute live set in 2002 in St. Louis. 13-Tet Los Angeles (disk 4) is a live document of a 13 piece lineup that performed two sets at The Smell in Los Angeles in December 2007 and is also the first live performance of a score by John Wiese. There are also many contributors to this set aside from original members of John Wiese and Corydon Ronnau: Mitchell Brown, Sarah Cake, Kevin Drumm, Gerritt, Kate Hall (Mika Miko), Joseph Hammer (Solid Eye), Aaron Hemphill (Liars, Skull Sküll), Jesse Jackson (Flaspar), Greg Kelley (Nmperign), Tim Koh (White Magic, Ariel Pink), Danny McClain (Grand Ulena), Giles Miller, Oblivia (Smegma), Andy Ortmann (Panicsville), Sam Ott (The Fucking Angels), Tom Recchion (Airway, LAFMS), Damion Romero (Speculum Fight), Jarrett Silberman (Skull Sküll, Young People), Dean Spunt (No Age), David Scott Stone (Melvins, Get Hustle), and Shannon Walter (16 Bitch Pileup)." label description (Helicopter) $35.00 Add to Cart

This release summarises what was initially a 6 hour performance / installation / radio broadcast that occurred at the TNT cultural centre in Bordeaux, France. The TNT centre is situated inside a former shoe manufacturing building. With several hundred meters of cables, the exterior and interior of the building were recorded using several different condenser and contact microphones, modified and mixed in real time on a 32 channel mixing desk. English underground noise/collage aesthetix, Ashtray Navigations is the solo outfit of young Phil Todd, our man from Leeds. Having released several of his records I can safely proclaim that this man is a genius of the kind not found kicking a dustbin around street corners these days. His work sounds like little sculptures of found sound and objet trouve, kept together by plaster and tape, all frayedat the edges, warped and buckled under heat, and then re-shaped into these fantastically alien configurations. Five tracks on The “End-of-the-Pier” Vault, the first four fly by in about two minutes, the final track a seven-minute bleeder for overloaded guitars, tape scraps, altogether an unholy din the likes of which we here at Worlds of Possibility wholeheartedly approve of. In other words, a real keeper. It might be up there with his Four Raga Moods and Tristes Tropiques albums, and the split 7” with Gang Wizard, as his best work. Phil’s output is a whole other world unto itself, a crazed maze of outsider invention, and if you’ve ever stumbled across records or tapes by Dogliveroil, A Warm Palindrome, The Hotel Left Accidentally Unpainted, Inca Eyeball, Dead Man’s Gravel, Jarvis/Joincey/Todd, To Suckle the Pups, Target Shoppers, Anna Planeta, Blackthorne Stick, or countless others (really there’s too many), you’ve encountered the Todd-ster. Plus there’s his on-again, off-again record label Betley Welcomes Careful Drivers. Bob Bellerue/Halfnormal "Threat Level Charlie" CD "Out of nowhere comes a dramatically empowered recording .... Bellerue is a physical performer with no regrets. ... akin to other such experimenters as Aube, Knurl and a touch of Brume. ...sporadic sense of improvisation and drama... blindly organic and freeform, truly made of ingredients.... There are mind numbing screetches and quieting intervals of solace.... Bellerue's sound collage of homemade instruments and noise have a big presence.... He calls it "poetic terrorism" and I call it an aural mind bomb. For fans of Nocturnal Emissions and Illusion of Safety." Boca Raton "Mansdoof" CDr "here comes another great surprise from absurd's vaults. being delayed for lots of reasons (financial being the most important of all) for sometime during which it was totally reworked & remixed 'mansdoof' stands for me as a great documentation of the dutch electroacoustic network that i've came across the last few years. for those unfamiliar with the project, boca raton is the vehicle of martijn tellinga (the person behind the dutch 'mixer' label) who offers us here 10 pieces (or 1 piece divided in 10 tracks if you wish) of an adventurous electroacoustic nature that will definitely appeal to all those who seek obscure creative soundscapes to stimulate their body and mind." label description (Absurd) $9.00 Add to Cart
