Dave Phillips + R.H.Y. Yau "Illusion Is A Natural Condition" CD "In the sense of a therapeutic exposition, testing limitations, reactions of the psyche and of the body, of the realities and the senses, relating to direct social and behavioural environments and surroundings, of mankind and its un/doings. I nstinctive, animalistic and emotional sides of existence, in search of an origin, not as much as a reduction but in the sense of a release from the omnipresent infatuation and swoon of the idiots and assholes and their reduction of being that debase dignity. Illusion is a natural condition.
Dave Philips + R.H.Y. Yau presents Illusion Is A Natural Condition" , the long anticipated Phillips + Yau collaborations culled between 20002005. D ave Phillips began his musical career when he was 17, co-founding the hardcore extremists Fear of God in 1987. As Fear of God developed Phillips began to see that their faster, shorter, noisier approaches to grindcore were merely a springboard for more psychologically challenging and physically demanding artforms. Soon after Fear of Gods demise in 1989, he joined the actionist Schimpfluch-Gruppe which has followed the traditions of abjection and transgression as dictated by the Viennese Aktionists. Phillips has further developed these transgressions along with sociopolitical actionism in his solo efforts. R .H.Y. Yau is a curator and sound artist who has been active in the sonic arts since 1993. Yaus sonic works are inspired by sound poetry, actionism, and the processes of musique concrete. But bored by the musique concretes academic cliques, Yau creates what he calls action-concrete. These organic synapses of voice, body, and raw materiality are then combined with raw electronics to sound experiences of both ultra-violence and absolute absurdity at its most base level.

CD "Long-time San Francisco based
sound artist, internationally known from his extensive discography as Crawling
With Tarts, releases his second full- length solo work titled Vitoj.Continuing
his microscopic exploration of dense sonic landscapes within volatile stases,
Gendreau eavesdrops on pressurized states of compressed gas within hydrogen
tanks, diaphanous vinyl recordings of archaic voices, and perilous work environments
in the far east. All explored in real-time, this series of recordings further
explore the volatile balance of Gendreau's physical and psychological statesscientific
detritus working as an acoustician and social/cultural detritus in everyday

are discovered in modes of "half-sleep." Vitoj offers a glimpse of

Zbigniew Karkowski/Antimatter
"KHZ" CD
"The second collaboration by Karkowski and Xopher Davidson (Antimatter)
is a masterful work that rewards any patient listener with slowly unfolding
layers of analog hum and buzz. The CD consists of one 45 minute piece, and this
format suits the work well, as this kind of piece needs to develop slowly over
a long period of time. The first 13 minutes are calm, and consist of low end
rumbling and quiet high-pitched tones. This sort of restraint has often been
a prelude to a blizzard of harsh noise in Karkowski's past work. kHz is successful
because it develops in a gradual manner, rather than simply being an exercise
in quiet/loud interplay. This calm atmosphere eventually gives way to rapid
clicking, analog patterns which hover at a moderate volume, and help the piece
achieve a sense of movement. By 24 minutes these hums and buzzes have become
a much louder chorus of shifting electronic pulses that are a massive payoff.
The next four minutes are an excellent study of the interplay between this all-enveloping
drone and some subtle, high-pitched staccato rhythms. The arrival of a brief
noisy section towards the end is barely noticeable due to the gradual accumulation
of intensity that characterizes the flow of the piece. Karkowski benefits greatly
from this collaboration, as it seems to encourage his (relatively) subdued side.
It is to their credit that the pair have restricted the length of this piece
to 45 minutes, resisting the temptation to fill the CD to its capacity. While
too many abstract sound artists explore only one end of the sonic spectrum,
Karkowski and Davidson have succeeded in producing a work that focuses on the
way these elements can work together. It is uncertain what relevance the only
sleevenote, "rebounding=junk of life" -R. Selavy, has to the sounds
contained within, but any alliance with Marcel Duchamp's feminine alter-ego
is a gesture to be applauded." - Jim Siegel, Brainwashed (Auscultare/Ground

"Desperate
Attempts at Beauty: Conceptual and Research Exercises"
CD "Desperate Attempts at Beauty: Conceptual and Research Excercises"
A long awaited full-length solo from Joe Colley (Crawl Unit). This ambitious
project documents sonic phenomena discoveries both mental and physical, with
or without alteration. Also features a gathering of text that is, simply put:
pure nihilism. The sound piece was sampled and composed from organic phenomena
and artificial electronic noises. The uneasy coexistence of cracking ice, disintegrating
clay and unstable systems of combined electronic devices 'could be seen as a
manifestation of the schizophrenia that is crucial to the survival of the modern
individual'. Desperate Attempts at Beauty was recently awarded the Transmediale
2005 award in Berlin. (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $12.00 Add

R.H.Y. Yau "Coagulation: Selected Works 1996-2000 " CD "Completely brutal docomentation of Yau's abject noise actionism completed between 1996 and 2000. As pure as it gets, this collection features rare compilation material and previously unreleased actions, including rare collaboration tracks with Kazumoto Endo."
"Eighteen short, painful
blasts of vocal-induced distortion that are easily on the same pain threshold
as Merzbow's wall-of-noise works, but without the time commitment Merzbow demands.
Coagulation is like a stripped-down Hollowing album, with the same infinite
layers of sound mashed together to create chaos (and sometimes all run through
a distortion pedal to create thick, blistering walls of static), but without
the melodic elements. The main source of Yau's recordings is voice, and for
all we can tell there's nothing here BUT voice, just pounded and processed into
something unrecognizable most of the time." Robert Beveridge (Auscultare/Ground

CD 7hz, founded in 1995 by Scott Arford,
has continued to function as San Francisco's premiere venue for noise and experimental
media. A space where new combinations of image, sound, and experience can be
realized. Since its inception it has had the privilege of hosting performances
for many of the world's most interesting, progressive, and challenging sound
and media artists. This CD represents some of the best recordings by each of
the 3 people that live at 7hz and make it the wonderful place that it is. Randy
has appeared on Ground Fault (GF009 - RHY Yau "The Hidden Tongue").

H.Y. Yau Edit for Unconsciousness
CD "The dark, black and white case denies the variety of activity going
on here. But 'Edit..' has this vast display of modes that affect the senses
like a blindfolded ride through a blacked-out city. Delightful tension and fleeting
sonic spectacle are the main experiences here. Four basic tracks encapsulate
four different pieces, each with several worlds inside of itself. Yau's 'Realia'
is a restless collection of nervous mechanical and organic noises, culminating
in a sudden blotch of noise cut off as with a meat-cleaver. Then the 'Headworms'
track by Arford meanders in and tinkles around with various objects, collaged
utterances from the throat of incidental electronics, the cluttered spiritual
clumsiness of messing-about with quiet sonics. But 'Drift Counter' is very nice,
a twenty-three minute float through the drifting ranges of warm static and fuzzy
mist, undulating and singing, a full experience that leads you into Yau's closing
piece of roughly the same length. I'll leave that one for your experience. Excellent
material. Try Yau's 'Hidden Tongue' disc too and witness some unique work going
on over there on the left coast." Manifold Records (Auscultare/Ground

Lionel Marchetti
"Sirrus"
CD "When it comes to appreciating electro-acoustic music, there is
a lot of subjectivity involved. One's responses to such and such sounds and
ambiences can vary greatly from one pair of ears to another. Yet, some consensus
can be reached in the case of particularly gifted composers. Lionel Marchetti
belongs to this category. Without following straight cinematic sequences ('cinema
for the ear' having become a much overused expression by 2001), his works hold
a dramatic charge, a narrative tension that grabs the listener's attention and
won't let go. Piggy-backing on the composer's busy release schedule in 2001
(with three new albums out by August), the label Auscultare unearthed Sirrus,
a suite in three movements created in 1989-1990. It is pure electro-acoustic
music, the academic kind, although it shows a vivacity, richness in imagery,
and creativity superior to many composers in the field, young or old. The pieces
are accompanied by Hermetic texts by Olivier Capparos (in French and English)
describing the Circle, the Fire, the Mud, and the Sky Principles. How they relate
to the music remains uncertain, but the symbolism they delve in finds echoes
in Marchetti's music. 'Micro-Climat' is the best piece: well-paced, with surprising
twists and turns but still very coherent. 'Passerelle' is also strong and includes
an unexpected synthesizer solo toward the end (Keith Emerson having something
to prove). The title track lacks some organization. Ideas tumble over one another
without indicating a clear direction or intention. This one also has some nice
monophonic analog synth (unless it is a theremin?) and gradually moves away
from real-world sound sources to become purely electronic. One detects the eagerness
and, at times, lack of focus frequent in early compositions, but Marchetti is
a top-rate composer. Even his slightly flawed works are worth checking out."

John Duncan Book/CD "Monograph with selected artworks, audio, installations and performances from John Duncan's periods of work in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Amsterdam and Scrutto di San Leonardo, Italy. Descriptions of Duncan's most significant events, illustrated with photos and drawings, many of which will be published for the first time. Includes articles and contributions by Daniela Cascella, Leif Elggren, Cosey Fanni-Tutti, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, Mike Kelley, Brandon LaBelle, Paul McCarthy, Tom Recchion, Takuya Sakaguchi and Giuliana Stefani. Also includes a CD of Duncan's audio work, with tracks that highlight each location as well as testify to the overall development of his music.
Over the last 25 years John
Duncan has defined himself as an artist through unceasingly engaging and often
challenging projects. From his days in Los Angeles working within the performance
cultures of the late-70s, to periods spent in Japan and Amsterdam working with
experimental sound, film, and radio, to his current residence in Italy, Duncan's
practice has matured into multi-media installations and performances. Investigative
and probing, the artist's works have been continually at the forefront of experimental
cultures gravitating around noise music, and lend greatly to defining in what
way sound may speak toward extreme physical experience while rendering often
surprisingly beautiful depictions. As the contributions to this monograph testify,
Duncan's art has the ability to enthral and terrify. Spanning his career, John
Duncan documents many important projects, seeking to represent through a critical
and intimate portrait of the artist his uncompromising work." Errant

"African Feedback"
BOOK/CD Back in stock! "Through a process of listening and speaking, African
Feedback documents an exchange between artist Alessandro Bosetti and residents
of villages throughout West Africa. Playing music by various experimental and
avant-garde composers to people met in villages, Bosetti records their responses,
asking them what they are hearing, and how they relate to the music and sounds.
Composing their responses, with field recordings made throughout his travels,
African Feedback is a musical portrait of cultural translations, misunderstandings,
different voices and languages. Including an audio CD and the transcriptions
of the listening sessions, along with an introduction by the artist, African
Feedback is a beautiful and beguiling work cutting across the ongoing questions
of cultural difference.
Alessandro Bosetti was born in Milan, Italy in 1973. He is a composer and sound
artist working on the musicality of spoken words and unusual aspects of spoken
communication, producing text-sound compositions featured in live performances,
radio broadcastings and published recordings. In his work he moves across the
line between sound anthropology and composition, often including translation
and misunderstanding in the creative process. Field research and interviews
build the basis for abstract compositions, along with electro-acoustic and acoustic
collages, relational strategies, trained and untrained instrumental practices,
vocal explorations and digital manipulations" melgun.net (Errant

V/A "Radio Territories" Book + CD The latest in the ongoing collaborative releases between Errant Bodies and Ground Fault. This new title is part of the Anthology Series. "The legacy of radio and the arts has spawned forms of radical culture, from early Modernist notions of the Wireless Imagination and its subsequent vernacular tongues to Acoustic Ecologys call for Radical Radio based on removing the DJ, transmission and broadcast media upsets and redistributes understandings of place, corporeality, social exchange, and the politics of information. Such instances of radicality find their current expression in radio networking and streaming, which seek to counter or supplement forms of public broadcasting through creating unique forms of collectivity. In response to these current initiatives, Radio Territories seeks to open the book on radios historical, medial, and aesthetical status.
Critical and creative essays by historians, media theorists, and radio producers, including Steve Goodman, Heidi Grundmann, Douglas Kahn, Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen, and Ellen Waterman, are coupled with artistic and activist projects, from such practitioners as Anna Friz, LIGNA, and apo33, with a view toward locating the expanding and deepening reach of radio. Presupposing an intrinsic relation between transmission and place, Radio Territories aims to examine in what ways physical and cultural geographies become both defined and unsettled by the powers of broadcast. While radio through the Modern period stitched together an electronic network by expanding outward, current radio may fulfill Marshall McLuhans global idea of the extended nervous system by networking individual lives on a cellular level. Radio is not only out there in the ether, but also totally inside, as signals that intensify the stratifications of culture.

Sutcliffe Jugend "This Is The Truth" CD The first new recordings from Sutcliffe Jugend in over 8 years. Sutcliffe Jugend began in 1982 as a sub-project from the main extreme band, Whitehouse, and instantly gained notoriety as one of the harshest exponents of the original power electronics scene in the world. After releasing the monumental 10xCS boxset "We Spit On Their Graves" on Come Organisation in 1982, Sutcliffe Jugend released a handful of albums until 1999. A single 7" was released in 2001 and they weren't heard from again since 2006 when they played their first ever live show. Four shows were performed in 2006 and work on a new studio album was soon underway. One of the most extreme, influential and mysterious bands of the early 80s were back almost 25 years later.
Recorded and mixed during the latter half of 2006, Kevin Tomkins returns to vocals for the first time since "The Victim As Beauty". While this album is a continuation of all before, it feels like a new beginning for them, for the first time Kevin and Paul have started to experiment with the Sutcliffe Jugend sound. Lyrically things have also moved on a great deal, with a more personal aspect to the songs than ever before.(Ground Fault/Hospital Productions) SOLD OUT

Christian Alati / Giuseppe
Ielasi / Ruggero Radaele CD "Sonoris isn't exactely known as an improv
label, but they make an exception here with the work of three Italian improvisers,
which are closely linked to the super improv label Fringes. I didn't glance
very much at the cover very much while playing this CD, so the notion that these
are two guitarists and a percussionist struck me. Whatever they produce, its
hard to pin down as guitar and percussion. They go by a slow curve from almost
silence to almost noisy, with crackles (what sort of guitar produces crackles
like a lap-top, me wonder in mild curiosity). There those recognizable AMM influenced
bits (although their curve is usually even longer) and even a link to industrial
music (the motor like buzz in 'Text Piece'). This makes this into a somewhat
more varied CD, and you could even wonder if the variations aren't too much.
Myself, I thought it was ok and thought it was a well-entertaining CD."

right person to fit these traditions of electro-acoustic music: intelligentely
composed with modern means (read: sampling), into relatively short pieces that
hold the attention. Without any limitation he jumps back and forth in his sound
material. Sometimes all the events seem to be apparent at the same time, but
at other times one long curve is drawn, such as in the beautiful opening piece

Ashtray Navigations
"End-Of-The-Pier Vault" 7" "Ah, this guy. Fair at
the top of the summit vis. English underground noise/collage aesthetix, Ashtray
Navigations is the solo outfit of young Phil Todd, our man from Leeds. Having
released several of his records I can safely proclaim that this man is a genius
of the kind not found kicking a dustbin around street corners these days. His
work sounds like little sculptures of found sound and objet trouve, kept together
by plaster and tape, all frayedat the edges, warped and buckled under heat,
and then re-shaped into these fantastically alien configurations. Five tracks
on The End-of-the-Pier Vault, the first four fly by in about two
minutes, the final track a seven-minute bleeder for overloaded guitars, tape
scraps, altogether an unholy din the likes of which we here at Worlds of Possibility
wholeheartedly approve of. In other words, a real keeper. It might be up there
with his Four Raga Moods and Tristes Tropiques albums, and the split 7
with Gang Wizard, as his best work. Phils output is a whole other world
unto itself, a crazed maze of outsider invention, and if youve ever stumbled
across records or tapes by Dogliveroil, A Warm Palindrome, The Hotel Left Accidentally
Unpainted, Inca Eyeball, Dead Mans Gravel, Jarvis/Joincey/Todd, To Suckle
the Pups, Target Shoppers, Anna Planeta, Blackthorne Stick, or countless others
(really theres too many), youve encountered the Todd-ster. Plus
theres his on-again, off-again record label Betley Welcomes Careful Drivers.

as well as a change in direction for The Bastard Noise. Malachi surrounds with
two uncompromising orchestral compositions that are both stunning in thier appeal.
The Bastard NOise line up is joined by a debut of L. Rauf and it delivers two
altoghether delicate compositions that seems an attempt at describing nature
on a universal scale with the vast distances between objects only traversed
by light itself; a glittering of long-since moribund stars from eons before
it was seen by man. Both units strive for the epic in their own manner."

sine, curious creeks, patient tone remains. Colourful audio digestion, sometimes

clear of any tricked out sonic demolition. Instead, Radio Ghosts focuses upon
the minutiae of the guitar: wood, strings, and amplifier. Through his refined,

collecting and arranging sound. My recordings attempt to blur the distinction
between electronic, acoustic and ambient sources. Analog or acoustic instruments
are used because of the direct physical process with which they generate sound.
I take field recordings from sounds that habitually go unnoticed in the daily
environment (airplanes overhead, trains passing in the night, the broken radiator
at the end of the hall, falling snow), as well as those which are less accessible
for hearing (the abandoned subway tunnels of Toronto, a muffled cab ride through
Guadalajara, contact mics on Jacques Cartier Bridge, etc.). I combine nondescript
omnipresent noises that surround us with instrumental and vocal recordings to
create a landscape of sounds that unites the properties of both musical and
everyday contexts". -Joda Clememt (Alluvial) $11.00 Add

Cold Cave "Cremations"
CD "Cremations is a collection of early demo/live/and unreleased tracks
from Cold Cave. From the projects isolated beginnings to the recent full band
line-up the development of this singular musical entity is documented here in
its icy electronic glory. From Cold Caves infancy sexual identity and
oblique existentialism have been expressed through biting lyrics and electronic
minimalism. Rarely has the human condition been exposed so brazenly as in Sex
Ads. Melodies, noise and rhythms clash as stories from below the surface
are retold. From the demo LP Coma Potion, which featured a rugged stripped down
distortion, to the suggestive Electronic Dreams tour cassette (featuring the
voice of Max Morton on the track Heavenly Metals). Cold Cave has
developed its own brand of genre defying electronic music, without ever betraying
its dark roots. Love and pornography, Industrial music and traditionalism, poetry
and profanity all mix together in a hedonistic, cocktail of nihilistic nights
and mournful mornings. Cremations collects all this work for the first and last
time. contains painted nail ep, coma potion lp, electronic dreams cs and more."

Eric
Cordier "Osorezan"
CD "Eric Cordier we may know from his work with the hurdy gurdy or
with improvisers, but to my surprise this new CD contains just field recordings.
The field recordings by Cordier span from 1993 to 2006, and we either made in
Japan or in France. Some of these pieces were 'edited an reorganized', where
as other pieces are presented as is. However, I believe no sound transformation
was used. This is quite detailed recording, and with the useful descriptions
in the booklet it's all easy to follow. The gas filled water of Japan, or the
unloading of cars; the bonfire and the lazy afternoon. It's all there. Perhaps
one could argue that this is hardly music, but I was listening with true fascination
to these sounds. Cut of reality, they become music, simply because Cordier pressed
them on a CD and we listen to it, rather than going out and listen for ourselves
- we could do that later on, if we want to, but it's raining (also a nice sound
event), so I prefer to stay inside and listen again to the Cordier CD. Such
richness captured in such elegant and smooth way: a true treat for the ears."

Emmanuel Mieville & Eric Cordier "Dispositif: Canal Saint-Martin" CD Xing-Wus 3rd release, Dispositif: Canal Saint-Martin, has well-celebrated French sound artist/composer, Eric Cordier in collaboration with fellow countryman Emmanuel Mieville. The frontipiece of this release is the primary track itself, which was performed live and composed in realtime during a concert at the Centre danimation Jemmapes, Paris. Marshalling well over 30 microphones as a sonic capture and repository of this Parisian cultural site, Cordier and Mieville transform the space and its environs into an organic vestibule of aurality and sounds. But perhaps more importantly and exactly, both these artisans of sound were able to produce and invoke an event for listening to draw us closer to the act of listening and also, to portray listening as it relates to everything else around, culturally and experientially.
Dispositif constitutes part of, and continues in, a long line of on-site realisations of what Cordier conceptually regards as a vernacular device a term which was mainly, and first, used to describe his long-standing but now defunct project, with Eric La Casa and Jean-Luc Guionnet, called Afflux. Briefly, a vernacular device intersects and traverses methodologies and approaches commonly associated with the fields of tape music/electroacoustic, improvisation and field recording or phonography. In more concrete terms, it is the transposition of the intricacies and complexities of Studio work onto a site specific context in order to unearth and shape the sonic character of the contextual site itself.
Aside from the primary track
of the live performance, two more tracks complete this release dispositions
en rotonde and le centre danimation which are remixes
of the primary piece constructed respectively by Mieville and Cordier.

Denis Tricot & Eric
Cordier "Orgue De Bois" CD "In the last few years,
with their Orgue de bois (Wooden Organ), Denis Tricot and Eric Cordier have
installed constructions which are at the same time sculpture and musical instrument
in many public spaces. Each Wooden Organ is unique, conceived for the space
that will receive it. A monument, a square, a street, a city... With it's long
undulating wooden lines (successions of joined slats), it creates privileged
spaces which are exposed to the public eye. After a performance, the audience
is free to explore and discover the instrument's vast potential for musical
sounds and noises.
More that thirty Wooden Organs have been created in the lat four years in France
and Italy. Generally around thirty metres long, these monumental yet extremely
light sculptures integrate in their construction the basic principles of lutherie
(instrument-building), and can be played like any string or percussion instrument.
The Wooden Organ is very simply amplified. The recordings, like the concerts,
use no electronic processing, but the monumental instrument itself intentionally
contains principles of mechanical resonance and vibration." label description

Eric Cordier "Breizhiselad" CD In making "Breizhiselad" Cordier has tried to rewrite some masterpieces of the traditional music of French Brittany. Apart a few field recordings all the material on this record originates in extracts from two songs of the A side of a 10" 1960s reissue of a 78rpm. On first listening, this record sounded horrible - but also as a work of genius. Horrible because of the catechism-like vocal arrangements but a work of genius in terms of the beauty of the melody and the conviction of the singers. Another particularity is the importance of the disc itself, whose vinyl surface is nearly erased, polished under a sea of cracks. Eric's project has been to transpose this traditional music into the tape music medium with a view to preserving what is strong in the source material and erasing the sugary, churchy treatment of these originally popular songs.
The source record may be familiar to older generations as one of the first recordings on which the Breton language found its place again after decades of persecution and censure. Since the record became available, these pieces have taken their place in a national collection that has helped reassess the value of songs and language that were hitherto considered obsolete by the intelligentsia and the state.

some even asked in themselves!) to use Cornucopia's 37 minute track ".c."

Matsunaga "Courtis_Matsunaga"
CD "This is the debut CD of a new label from Japan called Prele. It
is a collaboration between Anla Courtis (of Reynols fame) and Kouhei Matsunaga
(the man behind the Flying Swimming label, also from Japan). The disc contains
nine tracks of widely varying lengths and collaboration methods. To name a couple:
remix of the other's material, telepathic collaboration and real collaboration.
Most tracks are of a certain ambient nature, but with enough things going on
to definitely go beyond that (strange cuts, sudden outbursts of seemingly random
noise, etc.). The overall quality is pretty lo-fi, which is very good, because
it is combined with very typical computer sounds. This works very well and adds
a warm quality to the sound. For me the most interesting piece is actually the
longest one: the telepathic collaboration. Somehow Courtis and Matsunaga seem
very well in tune and have created a very good track with so many kilometers
between them. Somehow this track is almost a condensation of the whole CD. It
will be interesting to see what the Prele label has to offer in the future."

"Supersternal Notch" CD "Dailleau is a member of Triolid
and Le Complexe de la Viande and perfoms from time to time with Helmut Schafer
and Atau Tanaka. I'm unfamiliar with the bands but I know the two others as
composers of powerbook music, both in their very own style. This CD is a solo
CD recorded at various concerts, where he performed on theremin, msp-propelled
theremin, aks synth and computer. These eight pieces can be best described as
dense. Layered sounds with a drone like character, which can grow into noise
(but it never reaches the peak of noise). Although some of the tracks remind
me of laptop like cracklings and even a rhythm, such as 'Little Odyssey', Dailleau
never gets out of control and structure of the music remains important. The
drone like character remains his important thing. Therefore this is an utmost
enjoyable CD if you like the work of Asmus Tietchens, Troum but also Mego. Not

Duncan documents many important projects, seeking to represent through a critical
and intimate portrait of the artist his uncompromising work." Errant

of how image and sound work together to infuse the electronic material with
an element of the uncanny, and to supply the imagination of the viewer with
a glimpse onto infinity.Active since the late 1970s, Leif Elggren is one of
the most constantly surprising and mysterious conceptual artists to work in
the combined fields of audio and video. A writer, visual artist, stage performer
and composer, he has numerous audio releases to his credit, working individually
and also with the Sons of God (along with Kent Tankred). His music, often conceived
as the soundtrack to visual installations or experimental stage performances,
presents carefully selected sound sources over a long stretch of time and can
range from mesmerizingly quiet electronics to harsh noise. His wide-ranging
and investigative body of work consistently involves dreams and mysterious narratives,
often inverting social hierarchies to ultimately subvert the real with poetical
matter." label description (Errant Bodies) $19.00 Add

ErikM "Zygosis"
CD "'zygosis', which is his first fulltime recording, starts with a
witty beat track mixing high-pitched shakespeare monologues over syncopated
jazz loops, and quickly convinces you that the deconstruction of stolen sound
material (sourced from cabaret, orchestral music, rock, poetry...) may grow
into something utterly personal and unique - most extraordinary examples are
tracks 3, 4 & 6. after this tour-de-force, the listener is allowed a short
break, while the cd-player skipps through the almost empty regions of track
9 - 22 (microscopic shards of static, lasting only for a few seconds each).
those are quickly followed by a very powerful and dramatic piece (agora) that
bears an almost recognizable song structure. the cd ends rather quietly with
three unsymetrical ambient pieces followed by a short and funny epilogue. there's
nothing more to add, except that 'zygosis' is probably one of the most brilliant
achievements in musical 'piratage' so far, and first of all - regardless to
it's historical relevance - it's simply beautyful!" http606 (Sonoris)

Jarrod Fowler "
'Percussion' as Percussion" CD "Situated halfway between squall
of The Velvet Underground's Sister Ray and the crash of the Twin Towers collapsing,
Jarrod Fowler's 'Percussion' As Percussion upon first listening is nothing short
of ear-shattering; just when you thought the genre of noise had been pushed
as far as it could, Fowler turns the volume up to 11. However, a closer listen
reveals a subtle tonal symphony of dense textures and colors, weaving fragments
of shattered guitar chords, spoken word, and pop-song choruses into an audio
equivalent of a Pollock painting. The end result is nothing short of a body
shock, yet oddly one is left with the feeling of serenity and contemplation:
this is an indisputably beautiful piece of music. Taking his cue from Eastern
philosophy, where music acts to liberate both body and mind, Jarrod Fowler might

witnessing time-lapsed erosion in action. For me, Sever conjures images of oncoming
storms, abandoned industrial sites, huge empty warehouses, creaking glass, ships
rocking in a port, the middle of the ocean far from land. Sever is an engaging
album of evocative, highly visual drone music made up of layers upon organic
layers that are in constant motion, and yet seem somehow still. Jim Haynes has
collaborated with Loren Chasse (as the duo Coelacanth), Keith Evans, Steve Stapleton
(Nurse With Wound) and irr.app.(ext.)." Howard Stelzer / Intransitive

M. Holterbach "Aare Am Marzilibad" 3" CD Manu Holterbach is a young French sound artist who proposes his many-faceted talents since already more than 10 years. He invents new instruments, spatialization devices and mutant loudspeakers that were showed around the world in diverse installations and performances, in solo or in collaboration with a.o. Sophie Durand, Pierre Berthet, Jean-François Laporte, David Maranha. He is currently working on a biography of the French composer Eliane Radigue. Manu also composes pieces realized with natural and industrial environmental sound recordings, like the one we proudly propose on erewhon, Aare am Marzilibad.
This piece realized in 2003
is a ready-made recording of a Swiss choppy river, the Aare, done with a microphone
hermetically locked into a bottle. What you can hear is the sound of thousands
of pebbles that knock together in the powerful stream. It illustrates perfectly
Manu's focus on microscopic events and fragility. Interestingly, the claustrophobic
atmosphere that results in the inevitable filtering of the glass bottle may
somehow remind you our previous 3"CD "Riss" by Lionel Marchetti.

Katien is a foray into dark, dense, and superb harsh electronics. Taking their
name from the infamous Japanese manned torpedoes, a submarine counterpart of
the Kamikaze planes of WWII, Kaiten submerges the listener in a world of claustrophobic,
shuddering tension. Distorted echoes of mayhem resonate against the hull of
a steel coffin speeding toward certain destruction. Grating, shouted vocals,
radio intercepts, and bombastic rhythms are crushed together to represent an
inevitable fiery death and a hero's grave in the cold, crushing depths of the
Pacific Ocean, all in the name of imperious glory. " (Annihlvs) $11.00

Kirchenkampf "Babel" 2xCD ""Babel" follows the recent and well-received albums "Island of the Dead" (on Cohort) and "Transmissions" (which we released last year). It is an extremely dynamic and dense work that could generally be classified as experimental dark ambient. The theme here is the Tower of Babel and each disc takes a somewhat different yet complimentary approach: the first ("Red Babylon") is generally a rather heavy and intense recording, while the second ("Citadel of the Nevermind") is more droney and dream-like. A profound and monumental journey lasting well over two hours.
'kirchenkampf', the project of John Gore (Cohort Records, The Oratory of Divine Love, >wirewall<), has been active since 1986. Since that time he has released numerous recordings on his own and other labels. Additionally, John has collaborated with a number of others, including Steve Hall (Yen Pox), C. (known collectively as Kuwayama-Kijima), perform on cello and violin respectively.
These two tracks were recorded at a construction site, the future home of an
expressway. This is music where the setting is as much an integral part of the
composition as the performances on cello and violin. A large fan whirrs throughout,
while the violin whines erratically and the cello broods in a more melancholic
strain. Excellent work, achieving a unique marriage of environment and performance."

Samartzis / Jean-Luc Guionnet "Soleil d'artifice" CD "The
trio of Eric La Casa, Jean-Luc Guionnet and Philip Samartzis first performed
in Australia in July 2005 during Liquid Architecture 6 where they presented
a series of surround-sound concerts in Melbourne and Brisbane. Their aim was
to formulate a set of responses that addressed the specific spatial and acoustic
dynamics comprising each site of presentation through improvised exchanges,
microphones and electronics, and multi-channel diffusion. The trio resumed their
investigations between April and June 2007 through a series of concerts in France,
Germany and the Czech Republic, which were used to interrogate form, space and
time using a revised set of strategies around location sound, amplification,
diffusion, and real-time processing within improvised exchanges. Their intention
was to explore the interplay between sonic articulation and spatial intervention
to afford alternating states of awareness between musical and non-musical sound
to demonstrate the complex set of aco ustic and spatial interactions occurring
between the constructed and the natural. Soleil d¹artifice is a culmination
of these investigations." (Swarming) $12.00 Add

Eric La Casa/ Jean-Luc
Guionnet "Inscape
- Lille-Flandres" CD Inscape is, for us, a sort of umbrella name,
bringing together various ideas and projects based in and around the real-time
capture of audio/visual material. Although comparable with techniques used in
the audiovisual surveillance of a specific site, surveillance itself isn't the
goal of the project. The site, the place, the environment are heard for what
they are, without the prior discrimination of considered attention. A sonic
form is inferred, or formed, from the constituent parts, in order to bring about
a musicality that is unpredictable yet controlled. This technical approach can
be adapted to all types of places, without limit and regardless of the resources
that might be available. The set-up itself is a primary consideration of the
project since everything is conceived in situ. Nothing is decided beforehand
even if Inscape's broad principles can be set out, reasonably straightforwardly,
as 'a system for the surveillance of a site based on available audio and visual
resources (microphones, contact mics, cameras etc
). On site, to create
an installation or a concert, the setting will be developed during few days
(from 2 to 5 days). The extent of the interface will be function of this site
specific device, the technical support, etc
Whether in a concert or installation
context, Inscape create, in an hour or over the course of a number of weeks,
audiovisual projects which link the inherent properties of a specific place
with the producers' aesthetic concerns. INSCAPE = everything in real time

"Soundmatters" CD "Soundmatters is the first major
compendium of the recordings from French-Canadian sound artist Jean-Francois
Laporte, including his highly acclaimed composition Mantra. In balancing formal
precision and intuitive expressionism, Soundmatters results in a series of visceral
compositions that build upon the traditions of minimalism, graphical composition,
and phonography. Laporte reveals his colossal talents for experiential composition
through deftly processed recordings of tumultuous windstorms that would make
Chris Watson proud, spiralling drones that he's polished to a Haflerian sheen,
the majestic bellowing of sustained horns in the empty cargo hull of a decommissioned
ship, and of course the metallic growl of his immaculate Mantra. Given the numerous
parallels to Xenakis' smoldering electroacoustics and Tony Conrad's delirious
harmonics, Laporte's work demands the attention as an under recognized genius

Brian Leber "Till"
CD "Brian Leber is a composer based out of Chicago, USA. Alluvial is
proud to present his first widely available work which is entitled Till.
Till is mostly an amalgam of pieces that appeared in slightly different
form in his own tiny private editions between 2001 and 2004. Leber comes from
a musical background which is more traditional, from a compositional perspective.
However, the style Leber demonstrates here is likely to be one that is familiar
to fans of other Alluvial releases- delicate field recordings, found sounds,
manipulated objects, and scrupulous attention to detail. The execution of his
works is what catches the listeners ear, and Leber uses no synthesizers
while composing. This is not improvisational music, but rather graphically scored
prior to execution. The pieces have room to breath, expand, and let the listener
set the pace at which to take it all in. The first piece is Isobar,
which begins way deep down in the distance until it slowly builds into a rather
massive, dense sound sculpture of howling wind, stones, short wave radio, and
sistrum. The second is Tracing Stones, which as its title implies,
is a study of found sounds from stone, field recordings, and is accented by
a dragging, droning cello which suggests some of David Jackmans work from
the Vacant Lights/Sphyx period. Last, is Mountains and Rivers which
combines the sound of manipulated objects and double bass into organic blend
which does not really sound at all as its technical description might imply.
This piece is as delicately composed as some of bernhard g?nters early
work, but as lithic and rudimentary as Jeph Jerman. As the title Till
suggests, Lebers work focuses on the organic qualities of sound and the
details that often go overlooked. A very powerful debut." label description

ambience will appear within the midst of the distortion, as well as a few quick
cutups, which at times can make it hard to notice when things changeover from
one track to the next, but none of the songs have titles so it's not like that's
important. The recording is really good, it's right on the line between having
a rugged sense of warmth and density and being overly clear, so it's aptly aggressive
and forceful but also has a clarity to it that lets a good amount of detail
shine through." AversionOnline (PacRec) $8.00 Add

Yoko Higashi and Lionel Marchetti "Okura 73°N - 42°E" CD Musica Genera presents another album from French musique concrète composer Lionel Marchetti (in 2005 MG had released the CD "Docteur Kramer (you are not you)" by Lionel Marchetti and Emmanuel Petit), this time realised together with his artistic partner Yôko Higashi, Japanese performer, dancer and vocalist. The album contains three compositions of musique concrète, one by Marchetti, one by Higashi and a collaborative work by both artists.
Each of the tracks is an
elaborate sound construction of individual characteristics and unique sound
aura. "Pétrole 73" is the artistic fruit of Marchetti's stay
at the "Stubnitz" trawler, the one of a kind ship rebuilt as a floating
cultural centre. Analogue drones, radio voices and mechanical sounds of working
hull create the atmosphere that contrasts with next composition. "Okura"
was realised by Higashi basing on the sound material gathered in Mozambique.
Field recordings of African nature and surprising electronic interventions interweave
with fragments of ethnic music, leading the listener towards the final, collaborative
track. "Pétrole 42" captivates with it's sonic depth and uncanny,
ethereal aura created by delicate synthesiser passages, distant, unearthly voices,

Lionel Marchetti | Jean-Baptiste Favory "100 000 Années" 2xCD
This is two separate CDs by two separate artists. For some reason they are released as a double CD.
Kitnabudja Town -
Lionel Marchetti
Kitnabudja Town is a fascinating and abounding composition, a colossal
encyclopaedia to dissect with patience, an unseen sound collage that revives
with the beloved techniques of the surrealists to reach a kind of automatic
writing, a flux of thinking that is nor music, neither science, philosophy,
neither eastern, nor western, at the same time electronic and shamanic... using
studio techniques that we can discern as archaic, lionel marchetti bends and
pummels his sources until their last death rattle, being not afraid of distractions
and collisions. A dense, visceral and generous work.
Des Sphères
- Jean-Baptiste Favory
Comprising seven electronic improvisations, this piece is inspired by
the movement of the seven celestial bodies closest to the earth with the sun
as a central axis. Each planet is represented by two sounds: one concrete, the
other synthetic. The concrete sound is not audible but modulates the synthetic
sound in amplitude and frequency. The result is then processed using several
effects to obtain a sound in constant evolution and partly random. Without seeking
to reproduce an existing astronomic model whitch is taken for reality, the piece
proposes a quasiorganic vision of what in former times was named «The
spheres» wherein the forces were realeased by the movements of celestial
bodies, acted directly on mankind. (Monotype

by Lasse Marhaug and Anla Courtis together in 1998, but remains unreleased for
now. Two additional solo pieces (last tracks on each side of the cassette) were
recorded in 2007 to complete the entire project. As a result, now we have plenty
of taped dark fluctuations of the low drones, some heavy processed location

on chrome tape and each cassette recorded on hi-quality cassette deck using

traditions of serious electronic avantgarde that integrated into the aesthetics
of loud & bloody harsch noise music. Damn hard, loud and overloaded skillfull
thing, but exciting and highly intelligent at the same time. Please, play this
CD as loud as it possible! Important: This is CD re-release of the same-titled
very limited CD-R released in 2006 on chinese label Doufu. Our CD version with
brand new artwork was fully re-mastered and also some tracks were added. The

Lasse Marhaug "Quality Control" CD "A giant of Scandinavian experimental music, Lasse Marhaug has been active in sound creation since his teenage years. His interests have spanned a wide range of styles: from improv jams to film sound, from humorous collages to crushing harsh noise works. This non-stop activity has resulted in a massive body of recorded work and numerous live performances all over Tellus. Besides his solo work he has collaborated with a multitude of fellow sound artists on stage and in the studio.
In the everflowing stream
of music from Marhaug, Quality Control leans towards the noisiest end of his
output. With an active, hands-on approach to sound making, it rushes forward
to present us with a panoramic view of a mock world inhabited by trash electronics
battling it out on a barren desert field at the end of the known universe. From
short outbursts to extended epics, Marhaug cooks up an explosive brew of storming
feedback and out-rock guitar overload. Quality Control portrays a mature artist
at the top of his game." label description (Anoema Recordings) $12.00 Add

Digital Narcis label. Here, he presents a group of recordings of wide variation.
He continues his series of "Scenes" recordings which incorporate field
and locational recordings with electronic elements. The first piece is inspired
by the radical piano work of Eric Satie. Other pieces includes cool, flowing
ambiance and cut up's of American, Japanese and European TV and radio broadcasts.
There is also his attempt at adding a warm, human element to the often tired
Electro- Blip sound. It's packaged in a perfect balance of austere lights and
earthy tones in an edition of 500. (Allubial) $8.00 Add

Mecha/Orga "Holder"
CDr "Iit was the evening of sunday the 22nd of january, when tziritas called...
a couple of days ago i know that komnas had phoned and asked him for a special
cdr project for 'a question of re_entry' but didn't know myself much 'bout what
the fuck they talked 'bout. instead of that he sounded as if he was reading
me a telegram, 'mecha/orga's in the hospital, faded 2 days ago at while being
at the dentist's'... that was all. i called yiorgis immediately thinking it
was a joke, though unfortunately it wasn't. being late at night and no visitors
were allowed anymore we postponed it for next evening in order to get'im some
bananafishes to read and kill time... however a severe snowstorm changed plans,
while he was already connected on the 'holder'
machine to check his hear's biorhythms... out of blue striked us the idea of
stealing the tape of it (being nothing but a simple tdk d60 recording in ultra
slow speed) as happened actually less than 24 hours later... and that's what
you get, the original 'holder' mecha/orga's recordings plus his impressions
in a short piece around the what for fun we call his 'near death experience'."

Roel Meelkop "(onkyo
ok)" CD "'onkyo ok is composed of recordings made during
Roels tour to Japan in summer 2001 (along with Frans De Waard and Peter
Duimelinks). Where Kiyoshi Mizutanis Yokosawa-iri CD (cmr1)
uses primarily rural sound sources from a selected area, onkyo ok
may strike a special chord and familiarity with anyone who has visited Japans
urban areas, cities and outlying regions. Various components of the rich Japanese
soundscape (to name a few: pachinko parlours, train crossings, crows, electrical
machines, people) have been captured, abstracted (or not), blended and re-composed
creating unique sonic snapshots of this beautiful and at times bewildering country.
The sound pieces are relatively constant over time (Roels characteristic
silences are at a minimum) containing numerous complimentary sources simultaneously
building together into broadband structures, then falling away to focus on various
seperate objects and events. This album serves as a beautiful document and expression
of the ever-changing Japanese acoustic environment as it was at the beginning
of the twenty first century" label description (CMR) $12.00 Add

The Native American drum, both recorded clean and processed beyond recognition, pulses with the primal beat of the earth. Packaged in black, hand assembled, emd.pl/records boxes, with screenprinted graphics in white and gold by our friend Wojtek Bednarski." label description
"Native American drums
are superb for rich resonating sounds due to the animal skin used. For Animality
I used a large drum with moose skin for powerful deep bass sounds and then also
a elk skin drum for penetrating mid sounds. Much of the higher sounds are from
"residue" noise of these drums. Much like how Native Americans use
ALL of the animals skin, bones, fur and meat. Even tho there is killing involved
there is an devout appreciation and divine gratitude to nature. All of the possible
sounds I could create with these drums I used for Animality. There is also some
of my voice sounds in there too." Menche (emd.pl) $15.00

Daniel Menche "Creatures of Cadence" CD "Despite what the title might suggest, Creatures of Cadence is not about endings, completion, or finality. Instead we find Menche inviting a slew of new mediators into his cathartic miasma. The medium now extends beyond the rich and unfathomable depths of somatic sound. His ongoing dialogue between body and mind has found sympathetic resonators in a myriad of instruments (percussion, cello, horns, and zither) that have proven through the ages of being capable of channeling both our most ecstatic joy and profoundest grief.
Creatures of Cadence
finds Menche in full exploratory mode; excavating well-concealed networks of
sonorous information through a systematic deconstruction of drone and pulse.
In the process, he further erases any perceived division between hearing / feeling
and performer / instrument. The result, if consumed at the appropriate amplitude,
is nothing less than a sixty minute journey through a voluptuous and pristine
mania." Label description (Crouton Music) $15.00 Add

heavily based around drones, pulses and ambient noise, falling somewhere in
the territories often treaded by labels such as Mego and Ant Zen. When we asked
Menche what the sound sources behind Eye on the Steel were his response
was that the record was his most diverse offering yet and included loads of
different sound sources. His work often stems from sound sources as varied as
the body (heart, skin, lungs, larynx) and natural field recordings relying on
wind, animals or insects, water, fire, and stones to crude, lo-fi, and primitive
electronics, broken microphones, damaged speakers, antique audio equipment,
truck horns, mangled drones from instruments such as accordions, melodicas,

stunningly brought together both his classic analog and recently-explored digital
concerns. Keeping pace between two laptops and an amplified sheet-metal instrument,
the walls of computerized droning distortion and psyched-out metallic scarping
easily reminded those attending to the world of noise that even icons with twenty-plus
year careers under their belts can still vivaciously channel the advancements
they helped build as well as compose stunning untried sounds.Merzbow's set no

3" CD "This new work by Michael Northam (aka mnortham) is a humble
attempt to represent in sound the inner force of his recently deceased father's
life-long passion for machines and long career as a driver of 3/4 midget and
sprint race cars. Where during his 16-year career (from 1949 until 1965) he
gained some status as a pioneer of the sport and a national champion. For Michael
this period remained a mysterious time of legend as it was some years before
his birth. This composition therefore is a journey into the heart of these legends.
A portrait of a sprit struggling to keep focus while riding a massive force
of machine. An interpretation of the experience that his father must have been
undergoing in the midst of a race.
Based on various sources
including spring cars themselves recorded at the Terre Haute Raceway September
of 2005. This work is a monolithic testament of the force of life of a man who
lived it fully until the end. As well, a meditation on the samasaric metaphor

music, Nehil is perhaps best known for his longstanding partnership with John
Grzinich and Olivia Block as Alial Straa, formed in 1994. Nehil also participated
in the Orogenetics arts collective together with Michael Northam and John Grzinich,
operating in Austin, Texas from 1996-99. Now based in Portland, Oregon, Nehil
continues to collaborate
with Grzinich, Northam and Block in sound, performance and organization.
Seth Nehil possesses an uncanny ability to create a wealth of sounds using innovative recording and performance techniques, without relying on effects boxes and processors. He creates complex sound environments that are subtle, clear and close. His sounds seem to emphasize the very silence that surrounds them, creating an infinite space for the listener's imagination to roam.
Uva presents one track, just over 20 minutes in length. Objects in motion, a complex layering of textures, circular sounds and harmonies that intensify and recede... these are the constituent parts of this engaging new work.
The term "uva"
means grape, associated with ferment and intoxication, and is also associated
with "ova" (the womb, birth, new forms). Uva thus implies the intoxication
of new forms, the pleasure and disorientingquality of this music, the ferment
of its creation, and the birth of its reception through the ear." - press

Nogray diverts his rock crystal crucibles from their usual function in the silicon

bowls being generators of distinct waves operating in the range of frequencies
from infra- to ultrasonic. Because of their superimposition and the acoustics
of the space they are in, chimeras or interferences are born. A musical event

The first track takes minimal synth loops (with additional material from James
Keeler of Wilt) that slowly roll and march into a grinder of distortion to be
spit out - angry and venomous. Aggressive but spent. The second track is field
recordings (with additional material from Joe Colley) smashed together and blended
into an atmosphere of empty warehouse sounds and abandonment. Negative and burned.
Sounds that bring constant movement, shift, panning and empty reverb."

Onomatopoeia "Irrelevant"
LP "Irrelevant
started life in 1997 as a cassette that ran to 70 copies. The 7.17 From West
Wittering Is Late Again have reissued it on vinyl and in doing so have done
us a great service. Utilising a single instrument for each track Onomatopoeia
create sounds that range from the almost Industrial to pure experimentation.
On Corduroy Croquette Clap-Clinic Cull a single cymbal is hit repeatedly, little
rhythms building and dying away. Blennorrhoea [utilising one Piccolo] creates
a ghostly ambience, Cellophane Cucumber Clamjamphire [utilising one hunting
horn] is equally funereal. You get the picture. Horns cymbals, piccolos, a bass
guitar and a zambomba [an African drum] all taken in some way to create sounds
that become removed from the original instrument. There must be some treatments
or multi tracking going on tho Im no expert, with maybe the cymbal track
coming though as the purest [and harshest] of the lot and Bland Basingstoke
[utilising the zambomba] being mangled in such a way as to sound like a looped
Con-Dom fill. My only slight criticism of the whole enterprise are the latter
parts of the almost side long Chafed Cervix Coleslaw Cum Chutney Cesspit [utilising
bass guitar] in the latter parts of which the bass guitar becomes too obviously
apparent. In a track that begins with some fine two phase oscillating fizz it
peters out into random bass farts that end up sounding like a poor mans Sonic
Youth solo." Idwal Fisher $13.00 Add

still maintaining the playfulness and non-purism found throughout LAFMS recordings.

Death" CD "Cocaine Death is a compilation of three of Prurient's
finest Hospital cassette releases as well as two unreleased tracks. The previously
released material forms a triptych exploring the relationship between futile
pleasure, substance and escape; escape being a myth. Cocaine Death (originally
C-10 packaged in an envelope, limited to 46 copies) is perhaps the most sought
after of the recent Prurient cassettes. The content is based on the glamour
and destruction of toxic nightlife. The B-side features guest vocals from FFH
and continues the themes with the addition of bondage. This material is a considered
classic modern Prurient. Caribbean Overdose (originally a C-10, packaged in
a standard shell package and limited to 100 copies) explores a different but
strangely direct topic of the sexual reproductive life of plants. There is nothing
common or typical about the sounds and direction of this material. Further examination
into the life of scientific advancement and education. Tylenol Murders (originally
a C-10, packaged in an oversized envelope and limited to 10 copies) takes the
sounds and concepts of the aforementioned releases and expands the sounds to
further limits of cracked static, strained vocals and strange melodic loops.
This sought after limited material is seeing the light on this release to most
Prurient listeners for the first time. Since the inception of both Prurient

format for the communication and participation in the industrial/noise culture.

from materials found in-situ, or from the space itself. No overdubbing or editing

Huge pines, chestnuts, beeches,
and a few oaks. A vague border. On one side a Slovenian village, on the other
an Italian one, which our maps locate at the end of a cul de sac. En route for
this slovenian village, on this ageless path, having begun in the village of
Topolò, bags full of bits and pieces: a few biscuits, a recorder, some
chocolate, several worn out old violin bows. The path becomes ever steeper and
more tortuous, sometimes blocked by fallen logs, sometimes aided by stone steps
barely showing. The trees try to tempt us off the path; then one or two of us
give in to the call of a huge pine standing proudly to one side. With the first
light touch the tree speaks: a strangled sound pierced through by a note both
muffled and sharp, a pluck of another twig, a bowing of a third, a held frequency,
a slight pressure on another until it breaks. Each dried branch of this sound-tree

Janek Schaefer "Weather Report" CD-EP "Weather Report was created during my trips to Minnesota as a McKnight Composer in Residence with the American Composers Forum. I lived in Uptown Minneapolis in a wonderful wooden house surrounded by trees and lakes during December 2002 and June 2003. The catalyst for the project was the Minnesotan love for their diverse and often hostile weather.......which proved to be an exhilarating experience! My initial ideas were to create and collect new sounds that were related to the concept of weather in the broadest sense, to document and research weather in the media, and to float recording equipment up on weather balloons in various ways. These processes were integral as my focus was on sound associated with the weather, in preference to pristine recordings of the weather first hand. An obvious exception, in my last week, was the storm of 40 tornado warnings that touched down around the fringes of the city.
The weather balloons were used in 3 main ways. Firstly one icy winters morning I attached a mobile phone to receive and send low resolution sound, letting it float away from the surface of a frozen lake. Secondly using a digital dictaphone I made time lapse recordings of the sky by floating it 500ft above my lush metropolitan neighbourhood. Lastly three all American friends and I set out to shoot the balloon down late one June afternoon leaving the sound to parachute back to earth.
I let the recordings speak for themselves, no effects, no eq, just straight cut & splice collage where you can hear the edges of time. Some other sounds collected include: underwater ice skaters; flapping; old meteorological kit; leaf blowers; repairing weather damage; various 60s archive audio; melting ice, ski across snow, Minnesota forecasts on radio, in the car and on TV; Tornado chasing & test equipment; snow flakes landing on mic; squeaky tree; National Weather Service balloon launch; walkie talkie tones from my Science Museum workshop etc. Oh, and all temperatures in Farenheight.
The result is a highly compressed Found Sound story, heard as a drifting voicemail message from the weather balloon. A hybrid documentary collected and edited outdoors, where it is designed to be heard while walking with headphones....so... go find a Walkman! (Janek Schaefer)
Janek has created a very specific sound portrait which. has a musical quality to it, but is not a musical work. Whether intentional or not, this work reflects kindly on the days of the early musique concrete of Pierre Schaeffer and Rune Lindblad. The work takes the everyday sounds of weather - both experienced and interpreted by the media- and places them in a context that relies on short, snipped splices of sound that are clipped and brief and sown together to create a tapestry. It is a sound poem, it tells a story to the listener. This work explores the often dramatic seasonal differences of weather events of a specific place. But, listeners will undoubtedly identify with the content of this piece in direct reference to their own experiences with the weather where they live, or where they have been. Janek has managed to call out the details of these phenomenon to the listener and remind the listener of the events that take place everyday but often go unexamined. Michael
J. Schumacher / Stephen Vitiello "Untitled/Exchange" CDr
"It's unclear wether they did each a track, or that both tracks are the
result of a collaborative work. Both Schumacher and Vitiello are known for the
love of minimal music, that is music with not many changes, usually made with
computers. As such this collaborative work is a bit different. Although they
still play around with longer, repeating textures, almost in a drone like manner,
there are also sounds that swirl in and out of the mix. Sometimes it seems to
be a synthesizer, sometimes a guitar, sometimes perhaps the processed version
of acoustic objects. Not always this comes across as super structured music,
but more like a free flow. Nothing leaps out of the mix, and things move all
the time on the same level. This gives the whole release a nice and relaxed
ambient feel, even when as such the music has not much to do with ambient music.
Not really a big surprise, but throughout very nice." Frans de Waard

Scenic Railroads/Raglani
CD "Raglani's contribution to this split comes in the form of three
tracks motivated by a more focused attention to narrative elements and the microrelations
between layers of sound. Musical and nonmusical sources dissolve into one another,
filling the air with solid memories. Structurally, these pieces are Raglani's
most fully realized, and they contain his most explicit nods in the direction
of melody. Another chapter in the ongoing negotiation for an affectively deeper
form of electroacoustic music.
Along with Scenic Railroad's (Mike Shiflet and Joe Panzer) 4 digital improvisations,
this disc plays excellently off each other creating a disc with a consistent,
organic flow. An edition of 500. co-released with Shiflet's Gameboy records

CD "Three guys with a bunch of ropes, connected with sensors. By moving
around, climbing in the ropes, the sound is changed by the sensors. These three
guys are Edwin van der Heide, Atau Tanaka and Zbigniew Karkowski - three guys
with a wide experience in sound, electronic music and performances. The question
of course is: will their sound last on CD? Since they use pure tones and oscillations
which change because of bodily movements, nothing might happen if you play this
at home. It's unclear wether these four tracks, one analogue and three digital,
are recorded live, or used in live performances. The CD opens with 'digtal.1',
a slowly moving static line with small pulses, gradually increasing tension.
The 'analogue' track is much a like, but much slower. The built-up takes more
time (no surprise in a track that lasts 28 minutes) and is very austere in setting.
The two shorter 'digital.2' and 'digital.3' are like the opening track. More
pulsating, without getting anywhere near a beat. Number is almost like a sentimental
song, with a tone of sadness in there. The presstext talks about the missing
link between Hafler Trio and Pan Sonic, I'd like to add a link to Alvin Lucier's

Shinjuku Thief "Medea" CD "Medea is the latest work of cinematic ambient-opera by the totally unique Shinjuku Thief. Fans of the Witch Trilogy will not be disappointed as this employs the same dramatic overtones and subtle, flavorful touches found there...a sense of some other time, place. The female voice figures heavily throughout the work, an evangeline texture soft and silver, weaved like a gossamer thread through the center of a wavering storm, holding a narrative with the listeners center of gravity. Overall volume and emphasis changes throughout the piece, reaching to Wagnerian blasts of tumult and doom, to the melancholy , graveyard-quiet moanings of defeat. It's not hard to see Verhagen watching figures dance and hold still on some oddly lit stage as he forms these pieces. And that's normal considering that Verhagen scores many staged dance and performance pieces. Medea is a welcome addition to the respectable collection of Shinjuku Thief work" -- Vince Harrigan
Shinjuku Thief "Medea" CD LTD BOX ED. This version comes in a very high quality laser etched wooden box. "Medea is the latest work of cinematic ambient-opera by the totally unique Shinjuku Thief.
"Originally composed
for a controversial staging of the classic greek tragedy, "Medea"
is Shinjuku Thief's most dramatic, dynamic and sinister work to date. Notwithstanding
its extreme violence, it might also be one of their most beautiful. Fragile
melodies sung by boy sopranos float above demonic choirs and malevolent orchestras
only to be ripped apart by screaming sheets of industrial noise. Oscillating
between lush musical seduction and a level of brutality as yet unprecedented
across the band's backcatalog, "Medea" will appeal to fans running
the gambit of Dead Can Dance, Raison d'Etre and in slaughter natives in one
corner to Merzbow, and Brighter Death Now in the other." -- label description

Matt Shoemaker
"Mutable Depths" 3"CD "Matt Shoemaker had been invited to
participate in a field recording workshop in the Amazon in 2007 under the mentorship
of Francisco Lopez. With all of tactile squishes and wet slurps that introduce
his 20 minute composition for the Ferns series of 3" CDs, I had wrong assumed
that these sounds were sourced from those field recordings. No, it turns out
that Shoemaker's sounds came from the wintry environments of Seattle, Washington.
It is the sound of melting ice, and not some scurrying beetle. The details to
Shoemaker's composition, like on all of his work, are immaculately presented,
with each encroaching sound being vibrant and rich. The composition begins with
a few clicks and crackles from his frozen source, with a gradual swell of densely
compacted gray sounds and rumbles. Think Chris Watson's finale to Weather Report,
but with the narrative twisted towards the analysis of natural decay, rot, and
putrefaction. His electo-acoustic sensibility effortlessly makes itself know
amongst the field recordings with pierced drones refracting through the ice."

based around Antarctic co-ordinates. The polar regions are awe-inspiring environments
of inhospitable minimalism, and at the same time there's a beautiful serenity
to be found in their uncharted bleakness. There's a powerful purity and a timelessness
to be found there; snow which has lain un-trampled for millennia and ice which
formed eons ago; mountain ranges and deserts and rivers to be found if you look.

Howard Stelzer &

Talbot has been performing together since 1999. With a honed proficiency on
their selected instruments, Stelzer and Talbot create an audio dialogue relying
more on physically "playing" their equipment than using them as traditional
palyback devices. A vortex of cruncing and feedback from a needle grinding into
the turntable body while three cassette players sputter rapid-fire through elaborate
pausing and fast forwarding rituals can collapse into a squirming sine-wave
like whine from a single paused cassette motor a moment later. A rich array
of whires, chirps, sputters, skitters, squeals, and scrapes are the foundation
of Stelzer and Talbot's sound palatte as the build and shift their compositions."

Howard Stelzer & Jason Talbot "Songs" CD "Intransitive Recordings is proud to present the long-awaited debut CD by Howard Stelzer and Jason Talbot. "Songs" contains eight concise pieces of electro-acoustic music created from cassette tapes and a single turntable. Since the duo's inception on 1999, they have worked toward developing a unified, improvisatory sonic language by approaching their machines in a decidedly instrumental manner. For their first album, Stelzer & Talbot take inspiration from artists such as Schimpfluch-Gruppe, P16.D4, SBOTHI, as well as musique concrete and contemporary free improvisation, arriving at a voice entirely their own. The duo's music demonstrates a raw passion and energy, anchored by tense silences.
"Songs, generally, are evocative," writes Michael Bullock in his liner notes, "and evocation is nostalgic. These guys are neither. Stelzer and Talbot play sounds that are palpable outgrowths of the manipulation of household electronics; concretions of gesture, not abstractions of memory."
Stelzer and Talbot have
toured extensively, collaborating with artists as diverse as Kevin Drumm, Martin
Tetreault, Haco, Gert-Jan Prins, Keith Fullerton Whitman/Hrvatski, Roel Meelkop,
Le Quan Ninh, nmperign, Christian Renou/Brume, Brendan Murray, Brent Gutzeit,
Jack Wright, Ron Lessard, and Jason Lescalleet. In addition, Stelzer has performed
with Axel Doerner, Jos Smolders, Jerome Noetinger, Lionel Marchetti, James Coleman,
and Andrea Neumann, and is a member of Bhob Rainey's large ensemble the BSC,
whose first CD is forthcoming on Grob this summer. Stelzer runs the Intransitive

Synapses "Synapses
IV&V" CD "Synapses: Jean Luc Guionnet & Eric Cordier (Instrumental
device). Synapses is an instrumental device of combined string instruments (acoustic
and electric guitars, detuned piano, spinett-vina, hurdy-gurdy and cello), percussion
instruments and metal resonators - -all interconnected with double-bass, cello
and guitar strings. When one string is played the resulting sound or movement
is transferred by the connected strings to the next resonator. Thus one action
causes several sound events. In fact, it's impossible to touch one element of
the system without getting response of the whole device. Synapses is a hanging
sensible network. The suspended instruments are kept in tension by strings and
springs so that the system will enter a rocking movement in relation to the
sonic in -- and output of each instrument. These oscillations result from the
musicians' actions and constitute steady rhythms, the musicians have to deal
with. One string generally connects two resonance bodies, so that the resulting
sound is in 'stereo'. While the musicians are moving in the scrub of strings
and instruments, there is no head-on relationship between stage and audience.
In a concert this device is amplified and spatially distributed via 8 channels.
In contrast to the usual stage setting, Synapses is located in the center of
a space, while the audience is free to move around during performance."

the creative process of Tarab, the nom de plume for Melbourne based sound artist
Eamon Sprod, who bolsters his field recordings with sympathetic sounds activated
by his own hands rummaging through crumbling leaves, rusted bits of metal, broken
concrete, and shattered glass, just to name some of the more obvious sources.
Wind Keeps Even Dust Away is only the second documentation of Sprod's compositions;
yet, it is an accomplished work on par with the best of contemporary sound ecologists
(e.g. Chris Watson, Eric La Casa, Toshiya Tsunoda, etc.). On this album, Sprod
presents an intertwining series of compacted collages that tease aquatic references
from abandoned and overlooked sites of the arid Australian landscape. Every
sound of a pipe gurgling with water is but a mirage of sand, rust, and dirt
cleverly tricking the audience's collective ear." label description (23five)

this work over the course of 2004-2005. The piece was traded back and forth
between the two artists several times until it was fully realized. Ablution
is a contemplative work which explores darkness and light. Momentum ebbs and
flows in soothing washes. Tones, hums, and brittle, crackling interludes intertwine
to flesh out a murky smear of sound. Ablution is approximately 20 minutes in
length and packaged in a 5-inch sleeve. David selected photographs for the front

nay, elated, to announce the release of the fifth full-length Vertonen CD, "We
had a few sprinkles today, but not enough to help out in the garden." These
recordings are the fruit of a two-year process of extracting and modifying material
originally recorded in 1978. All resulting audio was solely generated from this
source material. The concept behind this CD stemmed from my interest in reassessing
the idea of "brainwashing" and how misperceptions that are easier
to accept can easily and dangerously corrode--and, worse, override--the realities
of the original event." label description (Crippled Intellect) $10.00 Add

"Return of the Interrobang"
CD "'Return Of The Interrobang' CD. It's not a best-of, but rather
a showcase of what Vertonen does. In 'Toroidal Ascension' he brings his drone-related
music. Bass to mid-range tones collide and bring out a nice atmospheric piece
of music. On the other hand, there is 'Burn The River', which is a much more
rhythmic piece of music, of minimalist pulses which are attacked by piercing
electronics and turntable variations. The final three tracks are much shorter
than the first two and there are turntable variations. These are open, spacious
tracks of rhythmic layers of similar sounds. Vertonen sees them as a homage
to Boyd Rice and Tom Recchion, and especially in 'Deplete To Ruination, The
Wide Shift', the exotica of Recchion is brought back to memory Five altogether
varying tracks, and indeed the perfect showcase for the great talents of Vertonen."

Wiese "Circle
Snare" CD "Consider "Circle Snare" a hard-wrought souvenir.
Composed and realized in the midst of a comprehensive Scandinavian/European
tour in 2008, John Wiese found himself tangled deep in dialogue with his instruments
and ideas. Wiese increasingly scrutinized his native tongue and vocabulary,
seeking new forms of grammar and cadence, as only extensive dives in unfamiliar
waters can inspire. His given electronic anatomy of drum machine, microphones,
tapes, and MSP folded out of their hard accustomed formations, breaking out
into a more cogent and vital arsenal. "Circle Snare" is the cumulative
result -- a finely detailed and dimensional evolution of an already unique voice.
Those who have been stalking Wiese all along -- through the landmark statement
"Soft Punk," to the recent "Dramatic Accessories" LP --
will find "Circle Snare" to be a revelatory work. As Wiese continues
to travel and work relentlessly and restlessly, we have no choice but to keep
up; the circle is a spiral from the side, and the greatest trap is standing
still." (No Fun) $12.00 Add

Eyes "Always Wrong" CD "Always Wrong is a mantra of
severity. Wolf Eyes has been scouring audiences across the globe with their
acid drenched industrial noise and dub terror psychedelia, establishing themselves
as the trailblazers of a genre and pioneers of the long-form noise tour. coming
forth from the piles of tape loops and effects the bulk of tables reeling with
electronics have been shed. This clarity never sacrifices intensity as paradoxically
this is the most organic of the full lengths but also the harshest and most
dissonant. Opening track Cellar immediately sets the pace of barraged
edits and percussive electronics as startling vocals spit from the dry throat
and remain unfiltered for the first time breathing a clear litany of scorn.
a new voice is rising and it isn't happy. throughout the album non-electronic
beats created from live drums replace programming while colliding tape loops
and junk metal bring new unstable rhythm like a house with erroding foundation.
Living Stone shows a more natural state of acoustic composition
highlighting the despondent subtle plucking of controlled guitar improvisation
that could come from natures ghost. forging ahead in We All Hate You
loud tonal horns and architectuarly placed electronics. however their aesthetic
core of pummeling hasn't been abandoned as the aggressive Broken Order
takes hold with shrill feedback fueling industrial cannon blasts of white hot
noise that burn the body from the neck down. an eerie harmonica driven death
march straight out of "once upon a time in the west" cries on the
closing track 'droll/cut the dog' Immediately it is clear that Wolf Eyes have
crafted a statement with maturity that stands at the top of their mysterious
discography. Always Wrong is a denial against conformity and the triumph of
walking a path alone. Young, Olson, Connelly. " label description (Hospital

in the world for 15 years. Walking East is his debut release.
Walking East is a photographic
sound portrait of my travels through the North Western provinces of India, the
Himalayas of Nepal and the Island of Papua New Guinea. I set out to explore,
through the people I met, the way in which my photographs and sound recordings
could magnify the sense of time and place. I began the project in January
1999. Covering 50,000 miles over the next 12 months. I found myself trekking
for days through the vast contrasting of landscapes, a western desert, a tropical
monsoon, and a dense jungle before I would reach a remote village. Camping along
the way and living amongst the families and tribes, I was able to experience
their daily lives and acquire an understanding of their histories and cultures.
Documenting a variety of people as they performed in music festivals, worked
in steel mills, sold their wares in markets, and celebrated their tribal rituals
together, I found many similarities. The presence of community; joy, hardship
and survival are universal. Gatefold sleeve with a 24

"...And The Vultures Miss Nothing." 3xLP Oh....I remember 1999.
Ground Fault was in it's infantry. Pinch A Loaf was winding down. Harsh noise
was apparently losing a bit of it's appeal by the masses. Over the next few
years, I noticed a trend of people listening to quieter noise. Seems like a
bad time to put out a harsh noise compilation. But in 2004 I saw another wave
of harsh noise building on the horizon. Now, in 2006 the kids are totally into
it again. Hooray!!!! I was falling asleep with all those field recordings that
were so prevalent in the first part of the new millennium. This LP set was compiled
between 1997 and 1998 by Harbinger Sound label boss Steve Underwood. The set
was produced in 2000 and sat on the shelves ever since. Now, in mid-2006, it
has finally seen the light of day. The 28 page booklet that comes with it talks
about stuff from the 90s and is totally out of date but it is most definitely
an accurate portrait of noise music in the late 90s. With: M.S.B.R., Con-Dom,

This compilation offers
many highlights. There is stunning live action from Merzbow in which Masami
Akita sounds as fresh and exciting as ever with a blend of rhythmic noise and
low-end rumble. Throughout his performance Merzbow pans sounds from speaker
to speaker, while constantly adding layers of density to the performance. Daniel
Menches live set is done justice here on record without the aid of his
totally cathartic stage presence. Here Menche creates a wall of deeply saturated
raw sounds and power drones. Shinichiro Okadas contributes a brutal piece
of totally raw digital sound. Oren Ambarchi presents a beautiful set of plucked
strings over a gentle drones blended with swashes of vintage electronics."

- Music from Mills 2001 CD with Chris Brown, Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros,
Maggi Payne, John Bischoff and Alvin Curran. "The Mills College Music Department
and Center for Contemporary Music continue to play a leading role in the development
of experimental music, a tradition that took root at the small liberal arts
college in Oakland, California more than sixty years ago. This CD documents
work in the area of electro-acoustical music by six composers active at Mills
today. Chris Brown and John Bischoff carefully sculpts his sonic materials according
to a pre-conceived architectonic plan. Pauline Oliveros' contribution also originated
in real time, during a performance that took place in the Mills Concert Hall.
The diversity of sounds created during her improvisations on an electronically
enhanced just-tuned accordion is astonishing. Maggi Payne is no less a musical
alchemist, who, with a huge repertory of layering and processing techniques,
transforms a seemingly minimal palette of sounds into a musical form of massive
proportions. Payne focuses on forging organic connections between the elements
of her sonic spectrum. Alvin Curran, on the other hand, revels in disunity.
Curran juxtaposes materials from the virtually unlimited field of sound available
to composers today, including the hauntingly beautiful voice of the late John
Cage who opened the doors to this multiplicity. The two interludes and a postlude
by Fred Frith provide further examples of "polystylistic" virtuosity taken in
yet another direction. Frith's elegant blending of sounds from a variety of
musical and cultural sources has a magical nostalgic quality, cinematic in its
effect. After more than a half century, experimental music remains a vital and
dynamic tradition at Mills." David W. Bernstein $12.00 (Mills) Add

"Overheard And Rendered" CD "with Maggi Payne, Pali Meursault,
Christophe Havard, Perri Lynch and Emmanuel Mieveille. The first of a new series
of limited edition sound work collections that illustrate the various utilization
of field / environmental recordings. This is intended to be an ongoing curatorial
invitation-only project that might expand into becoming more than just a disc
release in the future. Why? Partially because the
and/OAR schedule is usually booked up well in advance and there is only so much
time in a year to release new work, and since there are so many interesting
and talented sound artists in the world flying within range of the a/O radar,
that one solution was to create a vehicle which would enable the presentation
of many different artists' work at one time, and yet still be able to present
pieces of longer duration than compilations normally do. This would also help
alleviate the time it would take to issue countless 3" releases as well.
And while the main focus of the series is to help get lesser known artists work
heard, occasionally a track by a more known artist might appear as well."

not know (or care) a few years back we at Trogotronic embarked upon yet another
(mostly) money losing labour of love that is more often than not bad for our
immediate environs and, no doubt, in some quantity our flesh (though we were
able to purchase a Shanghai-made soldering hood this month with the proceeds
of another head chopping venture)... Inspired by some who appear on this collection
(and many who don't) Trogotronic was born not so much as a boutique pedal enterprise
in search of profit as an obsession with analog artifact generators as cause
rather than effect alone... With advertising costing as much for a one-moon-long
appearance in even an alterna-tree-burner title fraction of a fractional spot
as a 1000 piece disc pressing we figured a compilation of artists using the
gear they bought would be a better bet in the long run than a disposable toilet

wind we humbly present this offering as a joint cooperative release from Trogotronic

"After jamming onstage early in this period at the Casbah in San Diego
and using the material to put out the Live" 7" - this CD further
pushes the electronic confusion hurricane into truly brain fungus clawing vine
sound territory. Wiese's horror/libarian approach to noise sculpture and his
surgical skillz at scattering sound is fully matched and paired with the lurking,
sweating Anti-Intelligence live Wolf Bombast. Including totally strange piece
with the crew watching fireworks in Echo Park and chuckling it up with brews
in hand after a three hour drive from homeland Michigan. Hopefully your CD player
in car will spit this disgusting sound platter black at you to stuff inside
a lacquered decay piece of road killed raspberry splatter babies." - John
