Auscultare Research/Ground Fault

Dave Phillips + R.H.Y. Yau "Illusion Is A Natural Condition" CD "In the sense of a therapeutic exposition, testing limitations, reactions of the psyche and of the body, of the realities and the senses, relating to direct social and behavioural environments and surroundings, of mankind and its un/doings. I nstinctive, animalistic and emotional sides of existence, in search of an origin, not as much as a reduction but in the sense of a release from the omnipresent infatuation and swoon of the idiots and assholes and their reduction of being that debase dignity. Illusion is a natural condition.

Dave Philips + R.H.Y. Yau presents “Illusion Is A Natural Condition" , the long anticipated Phillips + Yau collaborations culled between 2000–2005. D ave Phillips began his musical career when he was 17, co-founding the hardcore extremists Fear of God in 1987. As Fear of God developed Phillips began to see that their faster, shorter, noisier approaches to grindcore were merely a springboard for more psychologically challenging and physically demanding artforms. Soon after Fear of God’s demise in 1989, he joined the actionist Schimpfluch-Gruppe which has followed the traditions of abjection and transgression as dictated by the Viennese Aktionists. Phillips has further developed these transgressions along with sociopolitical actionism in his solo efforts. R .H.Y. Yau is a curator and sound artist who has been active in the sonic arts since 1993. Yau’s sonic works are inspired by sound poetry, actionism, and the processes of musique concrete. But bored by the musique concrete’s academic cliques, Yau creates what he calls “action-concrete.” These organic synapses of voice, body, and raw materiality are then combined with raw electronics to sound experiences of both ultra-violence and absolute absurdity at its most base level.

This release features ten lithographic reproductions of original drawings by Leif Elggren. Limited edition of 1000." (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $12.00 $9.00

Michael Gendreau "Vitoj" CD "Long-time San Francisco based sound artist, internationally known from his extensive discography as Crawling With Tarts, releases his second full- length solo work titled Vitoj.Continuing his microscopic exploration of dense sonic landscapes within volatile stases, Gendreau eavesdrops on pressurized states of compressed gas within hydrogen tanks, diaphanous vinyl recordings of archaic voices, and perilous work environments in the far east.All explored in real-time, this series of recordings further explore the volatile balance of Gendreau's physical and psychological states‹scientific detritus working as an acoustician and social/cultural detritus in everyday nomadic life‹reaching the threshold of exhaustion where his realizations are discovered in modes of "half-sleep." Vitoj offers a glimpse of these stases in dreamlike form. (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $10.00 $8.00

Zbigniew Karkowski/Antimatter "KHZ" CD "The second collaboration by Karkowski and Xopher Davidson (Antimatter) is a masterful work that rewards any patient listener with slowly unfolding layers of analog hum and buzz. The CD consists of one 45 minute piece, and this format suits the work well, as this kind of piece needs to develop slowly over a long period of time. The first 13 minutes are calm, and consist of low end rumbling and quiet high-pitched tones. This sort of restraint has often been a prelude to a blizzard of harsh noise in Karkowski's past work. kHz is successful because it develops in a gradual manner, rather than simply being an exercise in quiet/loud interplay. This calm atmosphere eventually gives way to rapid clicking, analog patterns which hover at a moderate volume, and help the piece achieve a sense of movement. By 24 minutes these hums and buzzes have become a much louder chorus of shifting electronic pulses that are a massive payoff. The next four minutes are an excellent study of the interplay between this all-enveloping drone and some subtle, high-pitched staccato rhythms. The arrival of a brief noisy section towards the end is barely noticeable due to the gradual accumulation of intensity that characterizes the flow of the piece. Karkowski benefits greatly from this collaboration, as it seems to encourage his (relatively) subdued side. It is to their credit that the pair have restricted the length of this piece to 45 minutes, resisting the temptation to fill the CD to its capacity. While too many abstract sound artists explore only one end of the sonic spectrum, Karkowski and Davidson have succeeded in producing a work that focuses on the way these elements can work together. It is uncertain what relevance the only sleevenote, "rebounding=junk of life" -R. Selavy, has to the sounds contained within, but any alliance with Marcel Duchamp's feminine alter-ego is a gesture to be applauded." - Jim Siegel, Brainwashed (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $12.00 $9.00

Joe Colley "Desperate Attempts at Beauty: Conceptual and Research Exercises" CD "Desperate Attempts at Beauty: Conceptual and Research Excercises" A long awaited full-length solo from Joe Colley (Crawl Unit). This ambitious project documents sonic phenomena discoveries both mental and physical, with or without alteration. Also features a gathering of text that is, simply put: pure nihilism. The sound piece was sampled and composed from organic phenomena and artificial electronic noises. The uneasy coexistence of cracking ice, disintegrating clay and unstable systems of combined electronic devices 'could be seen as a manifestation of the schizophrenia that is crucial to the survival of the modern individual'. Desperate Attempts at Beauty was recently awarded the Transmediale 2005 award in Berlin. (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $12.00 $9.00

Kiyoshi Mizutani/Daniel Menche "Garden" CD "Misconceptions between reality and fiction, "Garden" is the first collaboration between these two monsters of noise. One long epic landscape with all "high sounds" treated by Kiyoshi Mizutani, and all "low sounds" treated by Daniel Menche." (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $12.00 $9.00

R.H.Y. Yau "Coagulation: Selected Works 1996-2000 " CD "Completely brutal docomentation of Yau's abject noise actionism completed between 1996 and 2000. As pure as it gets, this collection features rare compilation material and previously unreleased actions, including rare collaboration tracks with Kazumoto Endo."

"Eighteen short, painful blasts of vocal-induced distortion that are easily on the same pain threshold as Merzbow's wall-of-noise works, but without the time commitment Merzbow demands. Coagulation is like a stripped-down Hollowing album, with the same infinite layers of sound mashed together to create chaos (and sometimes all run through a distortion pedal to create thick, blistering walls of static), but without the melodic elements. The main source of Yau's recordings is voice, and for all we can tell there's nothing here BUT voice, just pounded and processed into something unrecognizable most of the time." Robert Beveridge (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $12.00 $9.00

Scott Arford/Randy H. Y. Yau/Michael Nine "7HZ" CD 7hz, founded in 1995 by Scott Arford, has continued to function as San Francisco's premiere venue for noise and experimental media. A space where new combinations of image, sound, and experience can be realized. Since its inception it has had the privilege of hosting performances for many of the world's most interesting, progressive, and challenging sound and media artists. This CD represents some of the best recordings by each of the 3 people that live at 7hz and make it the wonderful place that it is. Randy has appeared on Ground Fault (GF009 - RHY Yau "The Hidden Tongue"). Scott is also no stranger to Ground Fault (GF003 - Radiosonde "Meter Sickness"). Michael Nine is better known for his work under the name Death Squad. This is the fourth collaborative CD between Randy Yaus Aucultare Reseach label and Ground Fault Recordings. (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $9.00 $7.00

Scott Arford/Randy H.Y. Yau Edit for Unconsciousness CD "The dark, black and white case denies the variety of activity going on here. But 'Edit..' has this vast display of modes that affect the senses like a blindfolded ride through a blacked-out city. Delightful tension and fleeting sonic spectacle are the main experiences here. Four basic tracks encapsulate four different pieces, each with several worlds inside of itself. Yau's 'Realia' is a restless collection of nervous mechanical and organic noises, culminating in a sudden blotch of noise cut off as with a meat-cleaver. Then the 'Headworms' track by Arford meanders in and tinkles around with various objects, collaged utterances from the throat of incidental electronics, the cluttered spiritual clumsiness of messing-about with quiet sonics. But 'Drift Counter' is very nice, a twenty-three minute float through the drifting ranges of warm static and fuzzy mist, undulating and singing, a full experience that leads you into Yau's closing piece of roughly the same length. I'll leave that one for your experience. Excellent material. Try Yau's 'Hidden Tongue' disc too and witness some unique work going on over there on the left coast." Manifold Records (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $9.00 $7.00

Lionel Marchetti "Sirrus" CD "When it comes to appreciating electro-acoustic music, there is a lot of subjectivity involved. One's responses to such and such sounds and ambiences can vary greatly from one pair of ears to another. Yet, some consensus can be reached in the case of particularly gifted composers. Lionel Marchetti belongs to this category. Without following straight cinematic sequences ('cinema for the ear' having become a much overused expression by 2001), his works hold a dramatic charge, a narrative tension that grabs the listener's attention and won't let go. Piggy-backing on the composer's busy release schedule in 2001 (with three new albums out by August), the label Auscultare unearthed Sirrus, a suite in three movements created in 1989-1990. It is pure electro-acoustic music, the academic kind, although it shows a vivacity, richness in imagery, and creativity superior to many composers in the field, young or old. The pieces are accompanied by Hermetic texts by Olivier Capparos (in French and English) describing the Circle, the Fire, the Mud, and the Sky Principles. How they relate to the music remains uncertain, but the symbolism they delve in finds echoes in Marchetti's music. 'Micro-Climat' is the best piece: well-paced, with surprising twists and turns but still very coherent. 'Passerelle' is also strong and includes an unexpected synthesizer solo toward the end (Keith Emerson having something to prove). The title track lacks some organization. Ideas tumble over one another without indicating a clear direction or intention. This one also has some nice monophonic analog synth (unless it is a theremin?) and gradually moves away from real-world sound sources to become purely electronic. One detects the eagerness and, at times, lack of focus frequent in early compositions, but Marchetti is a top-rate composer. Even his slightly flawed works are worth checking out." — François Couture The first of many collaborative releases between Auscultare Research and Ground Fault Recordings. Christian Alati / Giuseppe Ielasi / Ruggero Radaele CD "Sonoris isn't exactely known as an improv label, but they make an exception here with the work of three Italian improvisers, which are closely linked to the super improv label Fringes. I didn't glance very much at the cover very much while playing this CD, so the notion that these are two guitarists and a percussionist struck me. Whatever they produce, its hard to pin down as guitar and percussion. They go by a slow curve from almost silence to almost noisy, with crackles (what sort of guitar produces crackles like a lap-top, me wonder in mild curiosity). There those recognizable AMM influenced bits (although their curve is usually even longer) and even a link to industrial music (the motor like buzz in 'Text Piece'). This makes this into a somewhat more varied CD, and you could even wonder if the variations aren't too much. Myself, I thought it was ok and thought it was a well-entertaining CD." Bastard Noise "Our Earth's Blood, IV" 5xCD "First conceived in 1999, and intensively honed over the past four years, Our Earth’s Blood, IV is finally realized. This is no collection - OEB IV is a full-length album spanning five discs! Few artists in any genre have delved to these depths to create such an expansive communication, in such a deepened language. Bastard Noise, aided by over two dozen artists from all over the world, have reached a true pinnacle with Our Earth’s Blood IV. Bastard Noise started alongside its powerviolence personality, Man Is The Bastard, in 1991. Our Earth’s Blood, the 7” EP released by Vermiform in 1993, solidified the future of Bastard Noise, rooted in caveman electronics and venomous vocals by Eric Wood. The Our Earth’s Blood II 10” split with The Locust from 1995 and Our Earth’s Blood III 7” EP from 1997, are but two more of well over one-hundred releases from this powerhouse. This new release not only encapsulates the Our Earth’s Blood tradition of over 15 years, but defines the spirit of caveman electronics that Bastard Noise created. Our Earth’s Blood IV pulls together “Skull Servants” in collaboration of sound and fury, including:

* ANDORKAPPEN (U.S.A.) * GOLEM GROSS (U.S.A.) * PEACEMAKER (U.S.A.)
* AZOIKUM (GERMANY) * GOVERNMENT ALPHA (JAPAN)
* P.W.E. (U.S.A.)
* BIZARRE UPROAR (FINLAND) * GUILTY CONNECTOR (JAPAN) * RICK GRIBENAS (U.S.A.)
* CHRISTIAN BASS (GERMANY) * JAY RANDALL/AGOROPHOBIC NOSEBLEED (U.S.A.) * ROTTEN PIECE (U.S.A.)
* CLEW OF THESEUS (U.S.A.) * KELLY CHURKO (JAPAN) * SICKNESS (U.S.A.)
* CULPIS (JAPAN) * MERZBOW (JAPAN) * SURROUNDED (U.S.A.)
* DEFEKTRO (JAPAN) * NYARLATHOTEP (U.S.A.) * VOLITION (ENGLAND)
* EMESIS (U.S.A.) * OBLONG BOX (U.S.A.)

As a result of careful composition, and hundreds of hours spent in the studio, these 24 tracks have both the variety and cohesion necessary for a truly successful collaborative album. Lyrical content reveals the wholly unique voice of Eric Wood, and the packaging tastefully presents all lyrics. Our Earth’s Blood IV defines the overall ethos of Bastard Noise, serving as a manifesto as much as an epic album, clocking in at nearly 5 hours long.Our Earth’s Blood IV is housed within a completely custom, die-cut package. Exterior graphics are printed in alternating matte lamination and spot gloss to create a unique black-on-black look. The package folds out into a cross-shape, with each disc housed in its own sleeve on each side of the cross and one in the center. Careful attention was paid with the design of both the graphics and the package to ensure that the presentation of this monumental album stacked-up to its scale and content. The package is identical in width and height to a jewel case, so it can be stored and displayed in most standard CD racks." label description (Cathartic Process) $45.00 $37.00

John Bischoff "Aperture" CD "Bischoff qualifies his work as the realization of a "reflective intention," where he determines sonic structure not only through the predetermined elements which go into a piece, but also through the active process of listening to the music as it happens and responding accordingly. Aperture opens the possibility for multiple readings through a series of diverse techniques ranging from additive synthesis to FM synthesis to sampled-based processes. Each of the pieces within the album was recorded in real-time with no overdubs." (23five) $12.00 $8.00

Burning Star Core "Challenger" CD "Challenger is a composed work rather than his more improvised work, each piece revolving around a central melodic theme with field recordings, an audio diary bridging the gaps. It's emotions of a period of time set to tape. The sounds range from pure tonal mood to huge electronic crescendos. But what's most remarkable is the use of space, where parts come in and drop to build or recede .When the piano crashes in "Mysteries of the Organ" its almost a frustration of paradise, a rejection of perfection or maybe a jolt of inexplicable life, unable to be translated into proper `communication. Juxtaposed with the quiet haunting of "Hopelessly Devoted" which sounds like a love letter written to outer space, it makes for an album that is both dynamic yet consistent as a full statement." label description (Hospital/Plastic) $12.00 $9.00

Leticia Castaneda "On the Verge of Redundance" CD "C.I.P. continues its tradition of presenting the first release by new and emerging artists with the release of Leticia Castaneda¹s On the Verge of Redundance. Leticia is a sound artist from southern CA whose deft compositions of field recordings, bedroom manipulations, iso booth experiments, and simple self-built circuits bring an elegant and enjoyable "quiet" contribution to the C.I.P. roster. In her own words, "a sustained focus while composing is to slow the breath of the listener. Silence is a prelude to eruption and realization. Shifting sine, curious creeks, patient tone remains. Colourful audio digestion, sometimes stagnant, (hence the title), sometimes vigorous." Drawing inspiration from classical modern electronic composition, Leticia offers a palette of audio explorations that carry on the tradition of new electronic music and will reward the discerning listener." label description (CIP) $10.00 $7.00

The Cherry Point "Black Witchery" CD (PacRec) $7.00 $5.00

The Cherry Point "Night of the Bloody Tapes" CD "Compiled from three years of cassette releases, Night of the Bloody Tapes provides a shattering drive-in experience of unrelenting horror and harsh noise nightmares. Equally fueled by Fangoria magazine, import laserdiscs, third generation vhs bootlegs, damaged contact mics & DOD death metal distortion, The Cherry Point has set the ultimate bait in the trap of terror. Four tracks, over 40 minutes of static walls, electronic jabs and junk crashes. Contains material originally from the long deleted split tapes with Ahlzagailzehguh, Black Sand Desert, Luasa Raelon, Nkondi, Andy Ortmann, Pedestrian Deposit, The Rita, and more. Mixed & mastered by John Wiese." label description (Troniks) $8.00 $4.00

Joda Clelemt "Movement + Rest" CD "Movement + Rest is the result of two years work listening, collecting and arranging sound. My recordings attempt to blur the distinction between electronic, acoustic and ambient sources. Analog or acoustic instruments are used because of the direct physical process with which they generate sound. I take field recordings from sounds that habitually go unnoticed in the daily environment (airplanes overhead, trains passing in the night, the broken radiator at the end of the hall, falling snow), as well as those which are less accessible for hearing (the abandoned subway tunnels of Toronto, a muffled cab ride through Guadalajara, contact mics on Jacques Cartier Bridge, etc.). I combine nondescript omnipresent noises that surround us with instrumental and vocal recordings to create a landscape of sounds that unites the properties of both musical and everyday contexts". -Joda Clememt (Alluvial) $11.00 $6.00

Nels Cline/Carlos Giffoni/Alan Licht/Lee Ranaldo "Nothing Makes Any Sense" CD "A constantly shifting and engaging long-form piece of developed drone, foreboding melody, and harsh grit, Nothing Makes Any Sense finds Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Nels Cline (Nels Cline Singers, Wilco), and Alan Licht pushing their guitars into a cacophonous state that bears much influence from the post-jazz fields they've all cut their teeth in, but also bearing down a forceful brutality that has sometimes eluded their past material. While Carlos Giffoni uses his analog Synth mastery to adequately contend and mesh seamlessly with the trio of strings, letting his analog noise pulsate and pierce with its own sense of contained stampede." label description (No Fun Productions) $12.00 $9.00

Cornucopia ".C. Works" 2xCD Cornucopia is the premiere sound art project to hail from the island of Puerto Rico. Claudio Chea and Jorge Castro have recorded numerous drone-a-thons on CDR which have been released by small labels from New York to Barcelona to Valencia, Le Mans and Mexico City. "C.works" is their first full length on the CD format, and to celebrate, they have asked for a little help from their friends. In all, fourteen other artists were asked (and some even asked in themselves!) to use Cornucopia's 37 minute track ".c." into their own composition. Two years later, this is the end result. Remixers included: Omei, Needle & Sony Mao, Lasse Marhaug, Black Sand Desert, RGV, Ultra Milkmaids, David Wells, TV Pow, duul_drv, Andrew Duke, Kim Cascone, Critikal, Zanstones, & Francisco López. Anla Courtis + Kouhei Matsunaga "Courtis_Matsunaga" CD "This is the debut CD of a new label from Japan called Prele. It is a collaboration between Anla Courtis (of Reynols fame) and Kouhei Matsunaga (the man behind the Flying Swimming label, also from Japan). The disc contains nine tracks of widely varying lengths and collaboration methods. To name a couple: remix of the other's material, telepathic collaboration and real collaboration. Most tracks are of a certain ambient nature, but with enough things going on to definitely go beyond that (strange cuts, sudden outbursts of seemingly random noise, etc.). The overall quality is pretty lo-fi, which is very good, because it is combined with very typical computer sounds. This works very well and adds a warm quality to the sound. For me the most interesting piece is actually the longest one: the telepathic collaboration. Somehow Courtis and Matsunaga seem very well in tune and have created a very good track with so many kilometers between them. Somehow this track is almost a condensation of the whole CD. It will be interesting to see what the Prele label has to offer in the future." Vital Weekly (MR) (Prele) $12.00 $8.00

Laurent Dailleau "Supersternal Notch" CD "Dailleau is a member of Triolid and Le Complexe de la Viande and perfoms from time to time with Helmut Schafer and Atau Tanaka. I'm unfamiliar with the bands but I know the two others as composers of powerbook music, both in their very own style. This CD is a solo CD recorded at various concerts, where he performed on theremin, msp-propelled theremin, aks synth and computer. These eight pieces can be best described as dense. Layered sounds with a drone like character, which can grow into noise (but it never reaches the peak of noise). Although some of the tracks remind me of laptop like cracklings and even a rhythm, such as 'Little Odyssey', Dailleau never gets out of control and structure of the music remains important. The drone like character remains his important thing. Therefore this is an utmost enjoyable CD if you like the work of Asmus Tietchens, Troum but also Mego. Not the least names to be compared with. Great stuff indeed." FdW / Vital weekly (Sonoris) $10.00 $7.00

I also included all lyrics from every track and an explanation of the origin of each song. If you are going to own one DEATHPILE CD - this is it. "Final Confession" features tracks from the following releases: "Dedicated to Edmund Emil Kemper" 7" EP, "Abominations" 7" EP, "Random Acts of Cruelty" CS, "120 Days of Sodom" Split LP, "Ne Plus Ultra" CD, "Back on the Prowl" CDR, "Gutters of New York City" CDR, the DP track from the "Pornography Hurts" CDR compilation, and one track from the Deathpile / Whorebutcher split CDR. Also I included one previously unreleased track called "Slaughterhouse Pornography." This is the last song I ever wrote f442-0031 Japan or DEATHPILE and the recording is from our final band rehearsal on 3.21.04." label description (Pain Compliance Productions) $9.00 $7.00

Demons "Evocation" CD "Consisting of Nate Young (of Wolf Eyes) and Steve Kenney, Demons explore near-epileptic and droning analog synth textures that elicit comfortable remembrances of electronic forefathers like Stockhausen and Cluster whilst simultaneously bludgeoning forward with the grating and scraping atonal complexities of Whitehouse and Throbbing Gristle. Having already rallied a fervorous flux of supporters with discomforting psychedelic multi-media performances and a slew of cryptic releases, Evocation is an appropriately elaborate and accomplished approximation of their shrewd identity and is their first full length CD release, with artwork by visual collaborator Alivia Zivich." label description (No Fun) $12.00 $9.00

Thomas Dimuzio / Dan Burke "Hz" CD "The truth is, you found something incomprehensibly comforting in these sounds, this noise, this audible darkness. It occupies the space and fills your lungs, so in such a short time you grew accustomed to this nightmare, probably just in time for Burke and Dimuzio to sever the umbilical cord so suddenly, leaving you helpless and in silence. (Richard di Santo / Incursion)
Dan Burke has called this one of his favorite works he's put out. Dimuzio is the guy behind Gench Studios, the place where so many experimental labels get their stuff mastered. Add a renewed energy gained from their connections to the noise movement, and you have some of the most original and true music of the new century. M. Holterbach "Aare Am Marzilibad" 3" CD Manu Holterbach is a young French sound artist who proposes his many-faceted talents since already more than 10 years. He invents new instruments, spatialization devices and mutant loudspeakers that were showed around the world in diverse installations and performances, in solo or in collaboration with a.o. Sophie Durand, Pierre Berthet, Jean-François Laporte, David Maranha. He is currently working on a biography of the French composer Eliane Radigue. Manu also composes pieces realized with natural and industrial environmental sound recordings, like the one we proudly propose on erewhon, Aare am Marzilibad.

This piece realized in 2003 is a ready-made recording of a Swiss choppy river, the Aare, done with a microphone hermetically locked into a bottle. What you can hear is the sound of thousands of pebbles that knock together in the powerful stream. It illustrates perfectly Manu's focus on microscopic events and fragility. Interestingly, the claustrophobic atmosphere that results in the inevitable filtering of the glass bottle may somehow remind you our previous 3"CD "Riss" by Lionel Marchetti. (Erewhon) $9.00 $7.00

As would be expected from an alliance of these two Swedish artists, Katien is a foray into dark, dense, and superb harsh electronics. Taking their name from the infamous Japanese manned torpedoes, a submarine counterpart of the Kamikaze planes of WWII, Kaiten submerges the listener in a world of claustrophobic, shuddering tension. Distorted echoes of mayhem resonate against the hull of a steel coffin speeding toward certain destruction. Grating, shouted vocals, radio intercepts, and bombastic rhythms are crushed together to represent an inevitable fiery death and a hero's grave in the cold, crushing depths of the Pacific Ocean, all in the name of imperious glory. Kirchenkampf "Babel" 2xCD ""Babel" follows the recent and well-received albums "Island of the Dead" (on Cohort) and "Transmissions" (which we released last year). It is an extremely dynamic and dense work that could generally be classified as experimental dark ambient. The theme here is the Tower of Babel and each disc takes a somewhat different yet complimentary approach: the first ("Red Babylon") is generally a rather heavy and intense recording, while the second ("Citadel of the Nevermind") is more droney and dream-like. A profound and monumental journey lasting well over two hours.

'kirchenkampf', the project of John Gore (Cohort Records, The Oratory of Divine Love, >wirewall<), has been active since 1986. Since that time he has released numerous recordings on his own and other labels. Additionally, John has collaborated with a number of others, including Steve Hall (Yen Pox), C. Eric La Casa/ Jean-Luc Guionnet "Inscape - Lille-Flandres" CD “Inscape is, for us, a sort of umbrella name, bringing together various ideas and projects based in and around the real-time capture of audio/visual material. Although comparable with techniques used in the audiovisual surveillance of a specific site, surveillance itself isn't the goal of the project. The site, the place, the environment are heard for what they are, without the prior discrimination of considered attention. A sonic form is inferred, or formed, from the constituent parts, in order to bring about a musicality that is unpredictable yet controlled. This technical approach can be adapted to all types of places, without limit and regardless of the resources that might be available. The set-up itself is a primary consideration of the project since everything is conceived in situ. Nothing is decided beforehand even if Inscape's broad principles can be set out, reasonably straightforwardly, as 'a system for the surveillance of a site based on available audio and visual resources (microphones, contact mics, cameras etc…). On site, to create an installation or a concert, the setting will be developed during few days (from 2 to 5 days). The extent of the interface will be function of this site specific device, the technical support, etc… Whether in a concert or installation context, Inscape create, in an hour or over the course of a number of weeks, audiovisual projects which link the inherent properties of a specific place with the producers' aesthetic concerns. INSCAPE = “everything in real time !” --Eric LaCasa (Monotype Records) $10.00 $7.00

Brian Leber "Till" CD "Brian Leber is a composer based out of Chicago, USA. Alluvial is proud to present his first widely available work which is entitled “Till”. “Till” is mostly an amalgam of pieces that appeared in slightly different form in his own tiny private editions between 2001 and 2004. Leber comes from a musical background which is more traditional, from a compositional perspective. However, the style Leber demonstrates here is likely to be one that is familiar to fans of other Alluvial releases- delicate field recordings, found sounds, manipulated objects, and scrupulous attention to detail. The execution of his works is what catches the listener’s ear, and Leber uses no synthesizers while composing. This is not improvisational music, but rather graphically scored prior to execution. The pieces have room to breath, expand, and let the listener set the pace at which to take it all in. The first piece is “Isobar”, which begins way deep down in the distance until it slowly builds into a rather massive, dense sound sculpture of howling wind, stones, short wave radio, and sistrum. The second is “Tracing Stones”, which as its title implies, is a study of found sounds from stone, field recordings, and is accented by a dragging, droning cello which suggests some of David Jackman’s work from the Vacant Lights/Sphyx period. Last, is “Mountains and Rivers” which combines the sound of manipulated objects and double bass into organic blend which does not really sound at all as its technical description might imply. This piece is as delicately composed as some of bernhard g?nter’s early work, but as lithic and rudimentary as Jeph Jerman. As the title “Till” suggests, Leber’s work focuses on the organic qualities of sound and the details that often go overlooked. A very powerful debut." label description (Alluvial) $8.00 $5.00

LHD "Curtains" CD "Phil Blankenship (The Cherry Point, ex-Lefthandeddecision), John Wiese (solo, Sissy Spacek, Bastard Noise, etc.), double flamethrower unit from Los Angeles." label description "Expect a shitload of abrasive distortion that rests more in the midrange to high-end, lots of swirling panning effects and crisp, biting feedback, and then some. On rare occasion some really twisted ambience will appear within the midst of the distortion, as well as a few quick cutups, which at times can make it hard to notice when things changeover from one track to the next, but none of the songs have titles so it's not like that's important. The recording is really good, it's right on the line between having a rugged sense of warmth and density and being overly clear, so it's aptly aggressive and forceful but also has a clarity to it that lets a good amount of detail shine through." Lionel Marchetti | Jean-Baptiste Favory "100 000 Années" 2xCD

This is two separate CDs by two separate artists. For some reason they are released as a double CD.

Kitnabudja Town - Lionel Marchetti
“Kitnabudja Town is a fascinating and abounding composition, a colossal encyclopaedia to dissect with patience, an unseen sound collage that revives with the beloved techniques of the surrealists to reach a kind of automatic writing, a flux of thinking that is nor music, neither science, philosophy, neither eastern, nor western, at the same time electronic and shamanic... using studio techniques that we can discern as archaic, lionel marchetti bends and pummels his sources until their last death rattle, being not afraid of distractions and collisions. A dense, visceral and generous work.”

Des Sphères - Jean-Baptiste Favory
“Comprising seven electronic improvisations, this piece is inspired by the movement of the seven celestial bodies closest to the earth with the sun as a central axis. Each planet is represented by two sounds: one concrete, the other synthetic. The concrete sound is not audible but modulates the synthetic sound in amplitude and frequency. The result is then processed using several effects to obtain a sound in constant evolution and partly random. Without seeking to reproduce an existing astronomic model whitch is taken for reality, the piece proposes a quasiorganic vision of what in former times was named «The
spheres» wherein the forces were realeased by the movements of celestial bodies, acted directly on mankind.”

(Monotype Records) $14.00 $11.00

Koji Marutani "Pataphysics" CD "Japanese composer Koji Marutani also runs the Digital Narcis label. Here, he presents a group of recordings of wide variation. He continues his series of "Scenes" recordings which incorporate field and locational recordings with electronic elements. The first piece is inspired by the radical piano work of Eric Satie. Other pieces includes cool, flowing ambiance and cut up's of American, Japanese and European TV and radio broadcasts. There is also his attempt at adding a warm, human element to the often tired Electro- Blip sound. It's packaged in a perfect balance of austere lights and earthy tones in an edition of 500. (Allubial) $8.00 $5.00

Kouhei Matsunaga "Complicated high still now..." CDr " When Eastern Europe only starts discovering "noise" music, in Japan - Meka of "noise' music, a new age of artists, naming themselves "post noise", wave is arising. One of them - Kouhei Matsunaga, well know from his split editions with Merzbow, constructed an interesting recording named "Complicated high still now?" from his archive tracks. Album consists of four tracks. Their totality makes an illusion of deep, sometimes dark, psychedelic mood to the listener. Album starts with silent and anxious track. The second one consists of prepossessing electronic loops. At the time of hearing the record the listener undoubtedly can recognise Japan music school. The third and the fourth tracks, which are the longest, Kouhei starts to rage over using the best Japan weapon - "noise". Noise itself is quite aggressive and reminds of roughest Japan "noise" epoch creations but the construction of the sound is different and characteristic only to Kouhei. "Complicated high still now?" is undoubtedly Japan "post noise" music masterpiece. Limited edition 211" - Label description (Autarkeia) $9.00 $5.00

Kouhei Matsunaga & Niko Skorpio CD "There are 17 tracks from Kouhei as well as 5 tracks from Skorpio who is from Turku Finland. Mecha/Orga "Holder" CDr "Iit was the evening of sunday the 22nd of january, when tziritas called... a couple of days ago i know that komnas had phoned and asked him for a special cdr project for 'a question of re_entry' but didn't know myself much 'bout what the fuck they talked 'bout. instead of that he sounded as if he was reading me a telegram, 'mecha/orga's in the hospital, faded 2 days ago at while being at the dentist's'... that was all. i called yiorgis immediately thinking it was a joke, though unfortunately it wasn't. being late at night and no visitors were allowed anymore we postponed it for next evening in order to get'im some bananafishes to read and kill time... however a severe snowstorm changed plans, while he was already connected on the 'holder'
machine to check his hear's biorhythms... out of blue striked us the idea of stealing the tape of it (being nothing but a simple tdk d60 recording in ultra slow speed) as happened actually less than 24 hours later... and that's what you get, the original 'holder' mecha/orga's recordings plus his impressions in a short piece around the what for fun we call his 'near death experience'." label description (Absurd/A Question of Re-entry) $7.00 $5.00

Mecha/Orga "54.24" CD "'as if a garden being planted and you are watching all the process from the bare earth to the colourful result, comes 56:24... generating a drone layer which slowly starts the cultivation process where layers upon layers slowly build a delicate atmosphere and the way they expand and grow draws an even more colourful result, as if a swarm of insects spreads the pollen in our garden, helping it grow even more beautiful and even more colourful, lasting in a flabbergasting droning result.." label description (Absurd) $6.00 $4.00

Roel Meelkop "(onkyo ok)" CD "'onkyo ok’ is composed of recordings made during Roel’s tour to Japan in summer 2001 (along with Frans De Waard and Peter Duimelinks). Where Kiyoshi Mizutani’s ‘Yokosawa-iri’ CD (cmr1) uses primarily rural sound sources from a selected area, ‘onkyo ok’ may strike a special chord and familiarity with anyone who has visited Japan’s urban areas, cities and outlying regions. Various components of the rich Japanese soundscape (to name a few: pachinko parlours, train crossings, crows, electrical machines, people) have been captured, abstracted (or not), blended and re-composed creating unique sonic snapshots of this beautiful and at times bewildering country. The sound pieces are relatively constant over time (Roel’s characteristic silences are at a minimum) containing numerous complimentary sources simultaneously building together into broadband structures, then falling away to focus on various seperate objects and events. This album serves as a beautiful document and expression of the ever-changing Japanese acoustic environment as it was at the beginning of the twenty first century" label description (CMR) $12.00 $9.00

Roel Meelkop "Numbered Four" CDr EP (Absurd) $5.00 $4.00

Mem "It Was A Very Good Year" CD "The newest Alluvial release is a bit of a departure from many of our past releases. It is perhaps more in line with our Kuwayama-Kijima compact disc from earlier this year. Mem is one Kamil Antosiewicz from Warsaw. Kamil existed in a previous incarnation as one third of the now defunct Polish trio, EA. Mem’s work typically attempts to link sonic anomalies with electronics. His most recent interests include the decontextualisation of sound material. He is currently experimenting with primal structures of non-organic origin, such as white noise and sine waves, and melding them into sounds of organic nature. He works mainly with a PC platform. On “It Was A Very Good Year”, Mem takes source material from perhaps the most popular version of a standard American classic of the same title from the early 1960’s. Mem uses isolated sections of string sounds from a big band orchestra and draws them out into slowly cascading layers. We hear humming, vibrating, drawn out drones that build very slowly into a massive crescendo of noise that eventually include others sounds from the orchestra. Many of the sounds are manipulated, but nothing outside the original recorded version is added. The piece results in a stunningly beautiful hour with hypnotic qualities that build in giant ebbs and flows. As a point reference, this is reminiscent of some of the best work from Charlemagne Palestine and Vidna Obmana. In addition to his work as a composer, Kamil runs the Salvia Association with Viön, and formerly worked as a music journalist and cyberculture writer-editor for the first Polish internet magazine titled "WWW". Mem and related:www.vion.pl" (Alluvial) $8.00 $5.00

Daniel Menche "Animality" CD "The final Menche's solo drum excursion is one hour futuristic shaman's flight. The Native American drum, both recorded clean and processed beyond recognition, pulses with the primal beat of the earth. Packaged in black, hand assembled, emd.pl/records boxes, with screenprinted graphics in white and gold by our friend Wojtek Bednarski." label description

"Native American drums are superb for rich resonating sounds due to the animal skin used. For Animality I used a large drum with moose skin for powerful deep bass sounds and then also a elk skin drum for penetrating mid sounds. Much of the higher sounds are from "residue" noise of these drums. Much like how Native Americans use ALL of the animals skin, bones, fur and meat. Even tho there is killing involved there is an devout appreciation and divine gratitude to nature. All of the possible sounds I could create with these drums I used for Animality. There is also some of my voice sounds in there too." Menche (emd.pl) $15.00 $12.00

Daniel Menche "Creatures of Cadence" CD "Despite what the title might suggest, “Creatures of Cadence” is not about endings, completion, or finality. Instead we find Menche inviting a slew of new mediators into his cathartic miasma. The medium now extends beyond the rich and unfathomable depths of somatic sound. His ongoing dialogue between body and mind has found sympathetic resonators in a myriad of instruments (percussion, cello, horns, and zither) that have proven through the ages of being capable of channeling both our most ecstatic joy and profoundest grief.

“Creatures of Cadence” finds Menche in full exploratory mode; excavating well-concealed networks of sonorous information through a systematic deconstruction of drone and pulse. In the process, he further erases any perceived division between hearing / feeling and performer / instrument. The result, if consumed at the appropriate amplitude, is nothing less than a sixty minute journey through a voluptuous and pristine mania." Label description (Crouton Music) $15.00 $12.00

Daniel Menche & Damion Romero "You Misunderstood Me First" 3" CDr (Banned Production) $8.00 $6.00

Daniel Menche "Eye On The Steel" CD "The sound on “Eye on the Steel” is heavily based around drones, pulses and ambient noise, falling somewhere in the territories often treaded by labels such as Mego and Ant Zen. When we asked Menche what the sound sources behind “Eye on the Steel” were his response was that the record was his most diverse offering yet and included loads of different sound sources. His work often stems from sound sources as varied as the body (heart, skin, lungs, larynx) and natural field recordings relying on wind, animals or insects, water, fire, and stones to crude, lo-fi, and primitive electronics, broken microphones, damaged speakers, antique audio equipment, truck horns, mangled drones from instruments such as accordions, melodicas, organs, and bass guitars with heavy gauged strings." label description (Alien8/Substractif) $10.00 $7.00

Merzbow "Anicca" CD "The first track on Merzbow's latest opus was recorded at Tin Pan Alley studios, London, on 20th April 2008 - the day after his momentous performance at ULU. Akita created an astounding and very unique 20-minute track, playing freestyle drums over his trademark noise. The final 2 tracks were created at Munemi House in Tokyo. Another fine example of why Merzbow is the undisputed King of Japanese Noise! 58 minutes in total." label description (Cold Spring) $9.00 $7.00

Merzbow "Tombo" CD "Masami Akita is back with his newest offering of early era Merzbow (it appears Masami went back in time and brought his EMS synth back to accompany his current eco friendly stance). Tombo is 3 tracks of sheering high frequency psychedelic sound experimentations proving once again why Masami Akita is the king of all noise musicians." label description (Fellacoustic) $12.00 $9.00

Merzbow "Live Destruction at No Fun 2007" CD "At the 2007 No Fun Fest, the legendary Japanese noise king Merzbow (Masami Akita) gave a blistering performance that stunningly brought together both his classic analog and recently-explored digital concerns. Keeping pace between two laptops and an amplified sheet-metal instrument, the walls of computerized droning distortion and psyched-out metallic scarping easily reminded those attending to the world of noise that even icons with twenty-plus year careers under their belts can still vivaciously channel the advancements they helped build as well as compose stunning untried sounds.Merzbow's set no doubt left longtime followers thoroughly fulfilled while those who've only heard the name thrown around in mythical regard were bound to have been left with a hearty appreciation of his genius." lael description (No Fun Productions) $12.00 $9.00

mnortham "Go" 3" CD "This new work by Michael Northam (aka mnortham) is a humble attempt to represent in sound the inner force of his recently deceased father's life-long passion for machines and long career as a driver of 3/4 midget and sprint race cars. Where during his 16-year career (from 1949 until 1965) he gained some status as a pioneer of the sport and a national champion. For Michael this period remained a mysterious time of legend as it was some years before his birth. This composition therefore is a journey into the heart of these legends. A portrait of a sprit struggling to keep focus while riding a massive force of machine. An interpretation of the experience that his father must have been undergoing in the midst of a race.

Based on various sources including spring cars themselves recorded at the Terre Haute Raceway September of 2005. This work is a monolithic testament of the force of life of a man who lived it fully until the end. As well, a meditation on the samasaric metaphor of the oval track—the circle of life we are all riding along and are bound to GO. (Ferns) $8.00 $6.00

Gen Ken Montgomery "Drilling Holes In The Wall" CD "Archive materials from one of the most mysterious musicians in electronic underground, dating from 1988 to 1991. Each piece composed by Gen Ken Montgomery is the result of domestic alchemy, transforming some ugliest environmental sounds into artistic images of impressive beauty. His instruments are just prepared toy synth, but also from time to time laminator, icebreaker, radiator, film projector and so on. These recordings were made in Conrad Schnizler studio in West Berlin, and also live on stage there, in time of Germany reunion." label description (Monochrom Vision) $12.00 $10.00

Alfredo Costa Monteira "Anatomy of Inner Place" CD "...now it's the inner place, the household objects. "All the sound sources are part of my domestic environment. Recordings include collaborations with jgrzinich and Olivia Block and solo works such as Tracing the Skins of Clouds (1998); From Cloud to Seed (1999); Uva (2000); and Umbra (2002), among others. He has performed throughout the US, in Europe and Japan. Seth Nehil is also co-editor and designer of FO A RM magazine, a journal of arts and research with a focus on sound art. This is Seth Nehil's first solo cd in 5 years." label description (Alluvial) $10.00 $8.00

Seth Nehil "Uva" 3" CD "In the field of electroacoustic music, Nehil is perhaps best known for his longstanding partnership with John Grzinich and Olivia Block as Alial Straa, formed in 1994. Nehil also participated in the Orogenetics arts collective together with Michael Northam and John Grzinich, operating in Austin, Texas from 1996-99. Now based in Portland, Oregon, Nehil continues to collaborate
with Grzinich, Northam and Block in sound, performance and organization.

Seth Nehil possesses an uncanny ability to create a wealth of sounds using innovative recording and performance techniques, without relying on effects boxes and processors. He creates complex sound environments that are subtle, clear and close. His sounds seem to emphasize the very silence that surrounds them, creating an infinite space for the listener's imagination to roam.

Uva presents one track, just over 20 minutes in length. Objects in motion, a complex layering of textures, circular sounds and harmonies that intensify and recede... these are the constituent parts of this engaging new work.

The term "uva" means grape, associated with ferment and intoxication, and is also associated with "ova" (the womb, birth, new forms). Uva thus implies the intoxication of new forms, the pleasure and disorientingquality of this music, the ferment of its creation, and the birth of its reception through the ear." - press release (20City) $7.00 $4.00

Nuisance Beacon CD Blake Edwards at Crippled Intelect has a knack for finding obscure artists that are really good. This disc is by a guy from the S.F. Bay area who managed to record a really annoying disc. It's annoying but interesting enough to keep you listening. Lots of layered repetative sound and loops. Good stuff. Mr. Edwards has a really good ear for this stuff. (Crippled Intellect) $8.00 $4.00

  KK Null "Galactic Tornado" CD "The album “Galactic Tornado” by Mr. Kazuyuki Kishino (KK NULL) presents the deep, dense & dynamic electronic music. It's unconditional, intuitive and highly emotional excellent audio-work. Combining synthetic sounds from various synthesizers and electronic machines with acoustic audio signals, the composer explores (from his own point of view) some artistic values of “psychedelic electronic sound” that were widly presented on space/electronic/kraut albums from 70s. Naturally, this CD could be recommended for listeners who prefer the contemporary experimental sound in its highest quality and for fans of “retro spacey” sound from the groups such as Popol Vuh, Cluster or even Tangerined Dream as well. Luxurious 6-panels digipack with silver lettering and spot varnishing feautures artwork with images done by Kazuyuki Kishino." label description (QuasiPop) $11.00 $8.00

Onomatopoeia "A Marble Holder From Andover" CD - I haven't heard anything from Onomatopoeia in YEARS! I had wondered what happened to Mr. Cheeses International. Evedentally he hasn't died from liver disease. It just took him 8 years to release a new CD. It is a shame this recording has been buried away for so long. It is really good. While putting aside the wacky persona of Mr. Cheese and forgetting that he associates with the likes of Smell & Quim, ConDom, the Rective crew and others you'll be suprised to hear such a well done 20 minute piece of soundscape material recorded in 1996. It's not a masterpiece but it is worthy of a listen. If you haven't caught up with the 90's yet, this is a good one to check out. (Cheeses International) $8.00 $6.00

Prurient "The Black Post Society" CD ""The Black Post Society" embraces and accepts the depression of not having anything left to hunt. The mask without a face to hold. The depression of the hunter after the deer is killed. It is better to be hungry than to have eaten. As fantasy shatters under the whip of reality, erotic malaise settles in the nest of the mind inverting this dormant fuel to rekindle the endless cycle of sexual chaos." label description (Cold Spring) $9.00 $7.00

Prurient/Kites "The Hidden Family/+White+" split CD "Another jammed-elevator mismatch between two of Providence, RI's hottest pedal jackers and circuit board melters. The Kites part of the split evokes a crunchy square toned melodic flair with organic almost organ-fueled Disneyland melodies. These are the rockers. Prurient is another Providence-based sound artist doing low toned rumble jammed up against cassette culture screech. Live shows are a blur of power and volume. Yes the cream of the noise crop. This CD is a bit more subdued in all out attack and more drenched in total murk-o-phonic atmosphere. Percussive chug and downer vibes! The CD version comes with a bonus track from The Young Lords, a collaboration by both artists. (Load) <
